Hi

I have been with vodafone for about 3-4 years, my number is 11 characters so its quite long. I would like to move to 2degrees and to get a shorter number which is more memorable eg 022 12345 67.

How do people go from one number to the next?

1) setup a divert to new number and get charged?
2) setup a voicemail on old number to say that you have changed numbers?

Both will work but you'll need to keep an On Account plan with Vodafone to use call divert.

pros and cons about each

is there another way?

if you go with having your number diverted, how can you tell what number people are using? go through your online account all the time? sounds a bit nuts

Diverts are not a simple task, A divert actively receives the call within the network then passes it on the the receiving phone, This means your going to be charged by each provider, Setting up the voicemail is simple and costs the person making the call therefore you wont be charged, Diverts are only worth it if really necessary and your willing to pay.

TLDR: VM message is the simplest and only way it wont cost you significant extra.

I didn't think you could choose your number on 2degrees, except for sorting through oddles and oddles of SIM's to find a great number...

Also if you setup a call forward to the new number SMS, MMS do not follow the forward only voice calls so you may be better off as lucky015 says and use voicemail and send a broadcast SMS to all your friends with your new number..

It's hard to offer any advice when you haven't specified what your requirements are.

Both solutions are the answer to different problems, so you really need to decide what you're actually trying to achieve.

No - you can choose a new number from the one your SIM came with easily -

Log in to 'Your 2degrees'/Change your number -

"It's easy to change your 2degrees number. But there's a couple of things you need to know first.

You can pick from numbers starting with 022 0, 022 1, 022 2, 022 3, 022 4, 022 5 and 022 6. Some numbers have already been used, so if the specific number you want isn't available then we're really sorry. There are millions of numbers available so if you keep searching you're sure to find something that fits.
It's free to change your number once. But if you choose to do it again, it'll cost you $5.
When you get your new number, you'll need to set up your voicemail again. You'll lose any messages you might have saved.
We'll send you a text as soon as your new number is active.
Just one other thing. Being able to change your number is very cool, but there are always a few that just seem to want to abuse the privilege. Voicemail wont help with companies with retarded automatic dialers that assume a message has been delivered when a call is answered.

Also, my stoneage nokia would show a > onscreen when a diverted call came thru. new phone doesnt. It really helped to not get chatty when I was paying for the call.

You can bring your old number over if you want, including the 021 bit, which will save you having to contact all your contacts and change the details etc, but as you say you want a shorter number so that's out I guess.

As 'Iamspark' states above you can pick your own number in Your 2degrees 'Change your number' option.
A lot of customers have included their name in their number. Search for the number and if it's available it's yours.

If that works for you then perhaps texting your contacts with the All You Need Texts included in our Pay Monthly plans, $19 Carryover Minutes Combo and $10 Text Pack will probably be the most cost effective way of letting your family and mates know. Texts to Aussie numbers are included in these plans too.

Go into Vodafone and sign up on the cheapest open term plan and request an 021 xxx xxx (shortest possible mobile numbers in NZ).

Once setup, immediately port that number to your provider of choice.
