Our house has been using a single CAT5e cable to supply from demarcation to the inside, and I'm finally getting around to installing a master splitter and hooking up the second cable that has been sitting unused. I was just sorting out my pairs to make sure I had the colours/pairs all correct and it got me thinking: if the whole twisted pair thing is so critical to the DSL signal, why do (all?) routers have an RJ11 socket for the incoming DSL signal? This pretty much forces the last run of cable to be untwisted doesn't it? Kinda negates all that care and attention that went into making sure I got the twists as close as possible to the punch points. Or am I missing something really obvious here....

The last meter or two of cable will make no significant difference to the connection.

Providing you're only using a short cable it won't make a big difference.

Monster however used to sell super expensive BT to RJ11 cables to make your dialup modem work better - maybe you need to buy one! :-)

The big issue is people using roll out phone extension cables, I've seen 10m runs of those cause massive loss in DSL sync.

Ahhhh, good old tricky dicky used to pitch heaps of that stuff out, as did the warehouse.

Did they have it on their shelves next to their unobtainium HDMI cables? Damn near slapped the guy I bought my TV off 'cause he just wouldn't stop pushing them....

Thanks for the info guys. Going to be interesting to see what difference I get once I get the phone, alarm and crappy plug-in filter off the adsl line.
