I'm considering switching from Telecom to Snap for DSL. However, I'm of the understanding that some ISPs don't play nice with Unblock-US - in particular, those that do transparent proxying. Does Snap work OK? Alternatively, any VPN recommended that does work with Snap?

I would expect Unblock-US to work regardless, as they use alternate DNS entries & reverse proxy to deliver the service. A transparent proxy, by nature, shouldn't modify the requests in any way (simply serving from cache if suitable), so an outbound request to an Unblock-US proxy should be passed through as any normal traffic, unless it's explicitly being blocked, I would expect - and in this case, I don't think it would qualify as transparent proxying. I'm sure someone using Snap and Unblock US can confirm soon enough ;)

I hope so. I have heard it doesn't work with TelstraClear, and transparent proxying was fingered, but I don't think it was completely gotten to the bottom of.

I thought the transparent proxy thing was the problem listed by UnblockUS themselves on their website.

Here you go from their site:

Unfortunately some providers are using transparent proxy servers, which can break connection to our system OR forwarding all users DNS requests to their own servers aka "DNS hijacking" (see below).

“Black List” of providers with proxy servers:

Vodafone - New Zealand: You MUST have static IP to use our system with Vodafone. They don't forward users with static IP through their transparent proxy.
TelstraClear - New Zealand
SingTel - Singapore
StarHub Cable Vision - Singapore
Emirates Telecommunications Corporation – UAE
Telkom SA Limited – South Africa
Syban Systems Inc - Alberta (DNS hijacking)
Vodafone Italy (DNS hijacking)
True ISP - Thailand (selective transparent proxy)

Most likely you won't be able to connect to our system if your provider is using transparent proxy. DNS hijacking problem can be solved if you have router with DD-WRT firmware or can start local DNS server (most Mac's have one).

Ha! Of course I didn't think to look on Unblock-US's site. :-)

I'm a little confused how a true transparent proxy would impact their service, but, if they say it does, it must. *boggle*

Some unblock dns services aren't compatible with ipv6 so there might be that. But there is no transparent proxy on snap!

strongvpn.com works fine on Snap, although its throughput is  nowhere near as fast as the speed of my VDSL,

Thanks for the reminder - I've been meaning to try netflix. Currently running snap VDSL + unblockus trial + netflix trial and all seem to be working perfectly on an windows 8 HTPC.

Sorry for the hijack but I really dont want to create another thread topic....

I assume I could use a seperate Wifi Router plugged into an existing WiFI router and use unblock-us only on the WIFI router plugged into the main WIFI Router and as such any device which I need to run with unblock us could effectivly run on the second wifi router leaving the main router free for 'business as usual for all devices in the house'.

Astrill VPN works well with Snap, get full speed through the LA servers

Trialled unblock-us and found that it performed worse than Astrill so stuck with that
