I've previously posted about the delay in Snap offering UFB in Palmerston North, and, as has been posted by Snap itself, they have recently been able to offer connections here now.

Well, we had the Chorus guys here on Friday and the local installers (Contel?) here today. The problem is they've not managed to get it working - apparently the connection from the street to the ONT is working fine, but the connection's just not happening. Apparently Chorus and Snap blame each other for the problem. (Snap have also already ported our number so the copper phone line's dead, but the ADSL is still live; luckily we have been able to switch over to VOIP using the Fritz!box as an ADSL modem.)

The interesting thing I got told was that this has been the same situation for all Snap installs they've done in PN; I believe they said it's the same for Vodafone connections in the city (again, only offered in the last few weeks). That is - there are a number of us sitting with partially completed UFB installs. The installers said they'll only come back to sort all of these incomplete installs once Snap/Chorus have sorted the cause of the problems.

I'm wondering if others who have signed up for Snap (or Vodafone) UFB in PN or other locations have had the same problems, if they have had them but they've since been resolved, or if everything worked first-time?

Cheers
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan

Just so you dont feel like your being ignored - We have only done 2 Snap UFB connections in Palmy and the third is due today - so I dont think that anyone else on here is in the same 'boat' as you.

But in saying that I can confirm that yours and another RSP are having interconnect problems with the GPONed gear in Palmy and their networks.

like yours - all cases the physical Installs have been completed (apart from copper cutover).

Thanks for the reassurance! What I'm most interested in knowing is the possible timeframe between physical install (ie, from yesterday) and having the equipment problem being sorted so the UFB works. I certainly didn't get the sense it would be sorted in the short-term! Hence, I was wondering what others' experience has been...

Cheers
Jonathan

Interesting to know... I rang Snap last Friday to put in a request for UFB, but the person I spoke to didn't seem too knowledgeable about UFB, and was pretty vague about the process from here. Apparently, I have to wait for a call from "someone" (probably Chorus or a subbie) to do a site inspection, before the physical install will take place. No indication of when this will happen though.

I'll be heading away to the States in 3 weeks, and will be gone for over a month, so the odds of being connected before I go seem to be dwindling, especially with this latest news.

Hi All,

Yes this is a known issue, ETA for it being solved is today, we will update once its resolved. It wont hold up any installs as the issue lies further up the network.

Thanks.

Heya, thought I'd chime in.

I am Snap's #3, I was wondering when someone else would pop-up on these forums. My install went well today, but I'm in the same boat, obviously.

Fingers crossed on this ETA of resolved tonight

Thanks Ralph - So it looks like I'll be back (or one of the crew) tomorrow to finish off the install process (to confirm service, cut phone lines over and finish the paper war off etc)

I can confirm that it's all up and running now, so thanks for sorting out the problems. Final thing is for Chorus/Downer/Contel to cut the copper line so we can use the internal phone jack points (Downer have confirmed they do this once they get the instruction from Snap that the connection's working).

Speed is pretty good - depending which server I used on speedtest.net, I've got 23-28MB/sec down and 8-9MB/sec down up. Which is all a damn site better than the typically 6MB/1MB we had with ADSL. Haven't done anything real-world intensive to properly test it, but sure hope those "loading" circles are a thing of the past...

Anyway, here's hoping these problems are now sorted for future UFB clients, and their installs go smoothly.

Woh, really? Is that a 250Mbps profile or something? I'm confused. Sorry to go off-topic, I thought it was only being offered at up to 100/50 at this stage?

I wish! No, perhaps I worded it badly. What I'm saying is that I'm on the slowest of the UFB plans (30 MB down, 10 MB up); of this theoretical max of my plan, Speedtest is indicating I'm getting speeds of between 22 and 28 MB down and from 8 to 9 MB up, as per this image:

Hopefully that makes sense? So not at all the wonder plan you were thinking!

I think he's referring to MB (megabyte) vs Mb (megabit) per second.

Out of interest, whereabouts in Palmerston North are you?

Confirmation of my non-geek status! Apologies for the confusion.

We're in Massey St; had UFB to the gate since about last April but have been waiting for a decent company to offer it.
