I am looking to join Snap soon but the high cost of the Fritzbox means I am reluctant to join at this stage as I don't want to go on a 24 month or 12 month contract.

I have a few questions regarding routers:

Can you use any VDSL router with Snap?
Is the Fritzbox worth the money?
How hard is it to configure a alternative router and is it worth it?

Using an Zyxel p-870h here , Y will need to be comfortable configuring a router/modem. Or know someone who can.
Its not hard just need to know what settings to change and where to go to find them n the modem gui.
Draytek recently released a vdsl modem might be worth a look as well.

You'd probably be better to just get the FritzBox as your next options aren't too much cheaper (http://pricespy.co.nz/category.php?l=s141619585&o=produkt_pris_inkmoms).

Fritzbox is good for most things, its wireless performance is junk, so forget covering a whole house with wifi and dect unless you live in a small apartment or a 2 bedroom with no yard you need coverage in.

VLAN 10 is needed on any router, if its telepermited it should support it, other than that no different to an adsl router really, stick in the settings and username and password.

Depends if you're just after a VDSL2 modem to use with another router or after a VDSL2 modem/router to use as your primary router.

The fritz has great potential but as mentioned above the wifi performance is poor VERY poor.

Also found the ATA to give less than stellar results.

The positives are that it provides a rock solid connection, the NAS provides pretty good throughput, internet filtering works well, guest access is a good feature.

Oh did I mention the crap wifi ........

I agree about the wireless performance of the fritzbox -- it is awful -- but, in saying that, I've seen some who've posted they think it is pretty good.

Wireless performance is a pretty subjective these days as there are so many variables and the average person doesn't understand all the technical aspects that will deliver a good/bad connection.

At the end of the day wireless co-exists with Ethernet. It is not, and never will be a replacement for a cable.

Well it is good compared to some of the dire free routers that have been provided by other ISPs.

I did find the fritz was a lot better wall mounted vs flat, on the side facing away from the wall, useless the other way.

Well you won't need the VDSL modem part of your box. You just need the router that takes Ethernet as it's "WAN" or "Input" (you have a lot more options).

Yeah I know, that's why I figure the Fritzbox might be overkill, including a VDSL modem. I just don't know what other options there are, if a regular router I already own would do it, or if I should get something newer and faster with gigabit ethernet that has some additional capability.
