My Orcon is down this morning. Tried ringing them but they say they are too busy to handle the call. If their answer phone can talk me they why cannot it say we have a fault etc. I am left not knowing if there is a problem or not and as I have have Genius I have no phone either. Any one else in the East Coast Bays area of Auckland having problems with internet.

Thaks for that mine has just come up. I dont really think an hour outage is acceptable and the message you qupoted off webpage tell me little. Degraded service what the heck does that mean. Degraded to me means that its degraded but still working, mine was dead in the water. If you have no connection its not degraded its down.
Thanks for the update anyway. I only had a cellphone and its not the easiest to search their web site with cellphone. I had a heck of a job putting the message up on Geekzone. Still think that when they have a problem the answerphone should just say that instead of cutting you off becasue they are busy.

Is a 2 or 3 hour more acceptable for you then, pretty sure they can make it longer for you if you would like.

Hi Guys

We had an issue with a core router in our Northcote datacenter. This would have caused an outage for a small number of customers.

The reason it was marked as "Degraded" was it only effected a small number of customers, not the entire customer base.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Actually I dont think any outage is really acceptable, considering it is also my telephone system. I can accept outages caused by natural disasters storms etc etc but an outage of an hour or more caused by equipment? failure is a real worry. The number of times my old telephone system was out is so rare that I cannot remember. But with all the progress of modern technology it is worse now days. If I remember correctly Orcon had a similar outage yesterday and I am forced to reboot my router several times a month. This may be something we have to accept with naked broadband but I hope that fibre when it comes improves on the current system.

This is why Genius (as with other low-end VoIP options) is cheap. If phone is that important to you, pay for a proper landline

So the day when gigabit internet is available for everyone, but theres going to be a 24hr outage while they upgrade you, you'll say no ?

Come on, outages are a fact of life with technology. Orcon didnt cause this outage on purpose. "Hey, lets pick on Browns Bay today".

I Agree that the old POTS line was a whole lot more reliable, but when you add it to your internet connection outages are to be expected...

Having changed ISPs a lot over the years, I know that this is not just an Orcon problem and I've been conditioned to just accept regular outages of up to an hour or so without too much worry or complaint...

Yes, it's annoying when the phone / Internet goes down, but, it's not the end of the world. With more people having mobile phones the home phone I think will become less and less of a need. Not sure what options are available with Orcon but my last voip provider had the option to divert on not available so in these situations you could still receive incoming calls. Even if you don't have that option, this is a residential service with best effort SLAs. I think it's something we are going to have to get used to in the short term while systems are shifted from pots to VOIP solutions. With the extra options that VOIP gives you, I'm not opposed to the change.

I do agree that degraded services != no services. Perhaps a bit more explanation that certain groups of users will not have service would be better.

I suspect that in the case of unexpected outages, ISPs may not have an understanding of how its customers are being affected. For example: if degraded means 1/3 of calls are dropped, then an unlucky user that tries 3 times during the period of degraded services might find that all of their calls fail, and thus are wide degraded service is a effectively a complete failure for them

The outage wasn't caused by a physical last mile failure so fibre would have made absolutely no difference.

At the end of the day a residential internet connection is a best effort service with no SLA.
