Slingshot and MEGA partner on BIG plans

Slingshot has formed a partnership with cloud storage website MEGA.co.nz, aiming to provide New Zealand consumers with unprecedented value for online services, starting with Free MEGA accounts for all Slingshot customers.

Slingshot CEO Mark Callander says the new alliance sees two like-minded and innovative companies coming together to offer New Zealanders huge data plans along with free MEGA storage accounts – the perfect combination for today’s connected and media-hungry households.

“Slingshot sees this as a great opportunity to give customers even more value from their Broadband providers for the same low price”, he says.

MEGA is a cloud storage service that allows customers to upload, download and share all of their personal files online. It acts just like a portable hard drive, letting customers login from any internet connection and manage their files. What makes MEGA unique from other similar cloud storage services is that it is specifically designed to help protect the consumer’s privacy. They use state of the art User Controlled Encryption (UCE) technology that means the customer, rather than MEGA, is in control of who is allowed to access their files.

All Slingshot Broadband customers will be offered a free MEGA Pro 1 account for a full year. This comes with 500GB of online storage and is usually valued at approximately NZ$160.

The MEGA account will also be available as a free bonus to all new customers signing up to Slingshot’s new BIG Broadband plans. These broadband plans are already some of the most competitively priced in the market and come with massive data allowances, so the addition of a free MEGA account adds even greater value for Slingshot customers.

Slingshot new BIG broadband plans start at $69 for 40GB of broadband data, a Homeline and all the extras. From here customers can pay only a small amount more for either 80GB or 200GB plans, or move up to Slingshot’s two market leading Unlimited Plans. All of these Broadband plans will now come with a free MEGA Pro 1 account and 500GB of online storage.

This MEGA offer is just another addition to the free online services that Slingshot provides to its customers. These unique Slingshot services include Data rollover, where a customer gets to keep their unused monthly data from month-to-month, and Global Mode, which allows overseas visitors in New Zealand to access some of their favourite international web service back home without worrying about geo-blocking.

“It’s all part of Slingshot’s plan to build up a range of free online services for its customers and to give Kiwi households the online tools they really want for no extra cost”, says Callander.

Really... this gets priority before VDSL and new fiber plans.

<disappointment graphic insert>

SS give me VDSL and take my money !   :)

EDIT: Also just to point out the obvious. If we are going to take advantage of the 500 gb storage. We will really need a higher upload capable connection.

to be fair,  doing this requires basically no work at a techincal level.  it's just them unmetering the MEGA ip address and then giving out a bunch of voucher codes for a years subscription.

Whereas doing VDSL and/or UFB is a hugely complex, highly technical, very risky piece of work

Hey guys, just got an email from our marketing team. Relevant info is copied verbatim below :)

Both VDSL and Fibre plans will be launching soon, and we promise they’ll be worth the wait!

We do apologise that the launch of these products has dragged out a bit, it’s just taken a while to get our ducks in a row and create some plans that we think are really awesome.

If you want first dibs on the service you can email our marketing team at slingshotmarketing@team.slingshot.co.nz and we can get you to the front of the queue, and probably give you some inside info on the plans and pricing and some of the cool features (as long as you keep them to yourselves!).

Cheers,
Chris

Has anyone signed up for this yet? And what happens after the year is up, does it deactivate?

As an existing Mega customer, I just clicked on the link, signed in, and my 50GB went to 500GB.

After the one year is up you'll still have the pro account but Mega will start charging for it.

Cheers,
Chris
