I have a friend currently using Telecom services who I'd like to assist move to SNAP (naked) ADSL and probably 2Talk for phone.  The trick will be co-ordinating the porting of the phone number (to 2talk) and the switch to ADSL with SNAP whilst minimising the downtime and disconnection from Telecom.

I've looked at Snap's call plus, but I think the flexibility of 2talk for someone running a home business is a better choice.  Can anyone who has done this (or knows the process) give me some feedback on the best way to do this. Initiate the number porting - waiting till its confirmed then apply or a new ADSL service?  What will Telecom do once the number has been moved with the current line (and ADSL) service?

NB!
I've searched the threads - and see many recommend doing the port first - I'm just worried about Telecom spitting the dummy and completely disconnecting the line, delaying connecting SNAP ADSL (or even preventing it!).   I don't like the prospect or ringing that behemoth and politely asking them to 'hang on' to the current ADSL service whilst I move everything to a competitor!

What you're wanting to do can't be done without downtime.

The only way to avoid this will be to request a number change first with Telecom and customerlink your existing number.

If you port a Telecom POTS line any services on the line incl DSL will be immediately terminated.

Hi Biglegs,

Switching from one Service provider to effectively 2 Service provider can be problematic - it can be done but you need to expect that there is the possibility of it not going right so its important that you have good lines of communication with all party's involved. (especially if things don't go to plan)

In this case you could request for us (Snap) to move your broadband connection at a specific date, maybe 7 days out, once the order goes in at our end the broadband line then becomes locked at Chorus (search open service order in the forums) once this is in you can then get 2 Talk to put in a port request to be actioned for the same day as the broadband change plan date.

if all the above goes well then you can potentially complete what you need with minimal downtime. however the process does now always go 100%.

If you wanted to move both your voice and Broadband to Snap we can coordinate the the entire process and assign a specific person to work through this with you, we can also put some SLA's around downtime and guarantee that we wont loose your number during the process. Were there any features around the Snap Plus that did not work for you, the Snap Plus is very much a residential service, but we do have a completely different platform for business services.

Hope that helps!

Thanks,
TheRalph

I am an existing ADSL subscriber to Snap. I made enquiries about subscribing to one of the bundles Snap offers which includes voice. I was told call divert was not available.

This is a must have for me. Was this advise correct and will this situation change?

Hi RalphfromSnap and thanks for some useful information.  As I posted originally - I expect that there may be some downtime, and we can cope with that.  So what you're saying is that once I've put the request into you, then the service is in a locked state until its actioned.

That is entirely satisfactory and if we are a day or so without the landline it's acceptable. As soon as the number become available on 2talk, we can divert it to mobile until the ADSL connection is up.

Call plus doesn't have features like one number, and its this sort of flexibility, plus free faxlines etc that is appealing on 2talk.  I already use this personally and it all just works a treat for me.

So surmising -I get my friend to initiate the transfer to Snap ADSL, but indicate that we want to hold off the actual switch until we're ready.  Then initiate the port, and wait until that happens - 2talk suggest that you can nominate a day/time and that if that's not do-able they will let you know.  We could then inform Snap of that date, and maybe ask for the naked ADSL switch the day after to be safe.  Does that work?

Biglegs

NB Ralph - if there were details on what services Call Plus actualyl includes, they were nigh on impossible to find on your web site.  The 'wizard' style interface works possible for 80% of people, but if you're just looking for service details it's downright annoying.

You should be able to Churn your DSL connection to naked DSL and POTS will stay in tact. Then port number to who ever, and N-DSL will stay up once POTS disconnects (as step one has separated these services)

Of course some of this depends on your current provider, i.e. what they will do if you have a bundled service, will churning DSL cause them to cancel the landline? Usually with Telecom it will default back to their landline only plan.

Coffee baron, this appears to agree with 2Talks FAQ on porting:

"Q. Porting and Naked DSL
A. If you are planning a move to Naked DSL, you will need to let your Naked DSL provider know that you want to keep your existing phone line as part of the move.  Once the Naked DSL line is installed you should have your phone line as a standalone service.  You will then be able to port it to 2talk.  Please note that we do not advise attempting to port at the same time as this can result in your line being disconnected.  You can also request a ‘customerlink’ on your line once the move to Naked DSL is complete and once this is activated request the port to 2talk."

So I should be safe following this procedure if the current line/DSL service is Telecom?

That will work, but I think what they are suggesting there is that you request a new DSL line with your new service provider - which means they will install the Naked DSL on the second pair, that is a good way to ensure that you don't have downtime or loose your line number through the process, but a new install with Snap will be $199 for the technician visit and jackpoint installation.

Possibly the best situation for you to use is either the way we mentioned above, or as mentioned here and by sbiddle putting a customerlink on your Telecom line before we move it to Naked DSL.

Thanks,
TheRalph
