Hi I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this..

I'm unable to connect to VPN while using Orcon's new Genius black box. I haven't troubleshoot it fully and don't have much idea where to start.

What happened was yesterday morning I was trying to connect to my work's VPN in NZ, and it just kept timing out, as if the server never respond.

I disconnected from the NetComm NF4V, and jumped on my laptop (Mac OSX Mavericks) via WIFI and it's still the same.

Then I just opened my phone's hotspot, and that allowed me to connect to VPN.

I came in to work and asked our IT and they said they don't have a whitelist or blacklist IPs, so it shouldn't be my IP.

Oh yeah, we use the Cisco VPN client to connect, so it's not Windows built in client.
It should be fairly standard though, as I just used the same credentials on the Mac which worked as well.

Any help would be much appreciated!
Was somewhat amusing having fast VDSL connection sitting there and resorting to 3G for a connection..

nb. just found this link will give it a try even though it's not the same router... but wondering if there is similar action to be done for NF4V?

I have been using VPN for two years with three different "black" Orcon Genius modems at two different locations - no problems whatever.
I am now using VPN with a new "white" Orcon Genius - no problems whatever.
[The "black" Genius is the older ADSL modem router - the "white" Genius is the newer Netcomm NF4V VDSL modem router]
I don't think that the router is your problem.

The fact that it works on the Mac points to an installation problem on the Windows box.  Maybe uninstall and reinstall the client?  Were you connecting from another device behind the router at the same time?  As that might be causing problems, too.

The OP says the Mac was connected to WiFi, at least that's how I read it.

Just one or two things that don't add up. You mentioned you have a Netcom modem and VDSL, this means that if you got a router from Orcon, you're using GENIUS White. The GENIUS Black modem is a IINET modem. The two are COMPLETELY different.
Real easy to tell them apart too, one is white, one is black. :-)

ahaha silly me. It's the white one.
NF4V NetComm for VDSL.

The Mac didn't work with Wireless, though it did work via Hotspot from my mobile.

You have now told us that you have an Orcon VDSL connection and a "white" Orcon Genius modem  - and that you are having problems with your VPN connection.
We need more information:
Does your VDSL connection work without VPN?
With Ethernet cable and wireless?
Has VPN ever worked via your VDSL connection?
Does your internet connection work AFTER you have tried VPN? (look for the "no internet" triangle)
Are you using Windows &/or Mac on your desktop computer(s)?

We need more information:
1. Does your VDSL connection work without VPN?
2. With Ethernet cable and wireless?

4. Does your internet connection work AFTER you have tried VPN? (look for the "no internet" triangle)

Thanks Sideface, sorry about the numbers makes it easier to track.

1. My VDSL is my main connection at home, and I use it all the time, right now as well.

2. I've tried to access VPN via Ethernet (Windows Desktop) and wireless (Windows Desktop and Mac laptop).

3. It used to work when I was on Genius *Black* (ADSL2 modem)

4. I can not even get on the VPN with Genius White. Once I am on the VPN then all my connection's routed through VPN, so I'd need to use my domain credentials to access the internet via VPN.

5. I have Windows 7 Pro on my desktop.

My hardware is the same as yours.
All I can say is that I have had no VPN problems (using a Win7 PC) before or after I changed from my "black" Genius (ADSL) to the "white" Genius (using both ADSL or VDSL).
Sometimes I have to reset DHCP * AFTER * using VPN, but only if I didn't shut VPN down properly.
Can other Geekzoners help?

Have you changed any of the firewall settings from their defaults?

Have you restarted the Genius White?

My firewall settings are empty.. I'll give it a restart. It's been on for 2 days!

Only just restarted now, as well as made it restore Factory default.. still the same... would VPN uses some port that I'd need to forward?

I've never configured one, p42 of the Netcomm user guide refers....I'll check with the Team tomorrow and post back to you but I think this is a new one to us.

Thanks all for trying to help.. I'm looking into sourcing more desktops and devices to test. It does seem the Cisco VPN Client doesn't exactly work well with Win7 64bits though...

Ok, I don't know what to make of it, it's at least working for me now.

I've had to "untick" the Enable IPSEC box under Advanced Setup -> NAT -> ALG

Once that's off, I can connect.

I came across some people saying it needs to be enabled for Cisco VPN Client to work, but who knew turning it off would work too... this is less than satisfying but at least it's working.

Thanks for your time! And if mod could change the title that'd be great too.... (if anyone else would need this..)
