My work requires a GST receipt for a $50 prepaid topup done through the 2 Degrees website using a company credit card.
They used to send one out whey you called and asked, however now they only send GST receipts for the usage for the month.

Any ideas on how to get them to send a GST receipt for that particular top up? I have called and emailed several times but they refuse to give a receipt for that payment and will only provide GST receipts for usage for the month.

In the future I will send my boss to a supermarket to get a GST receipt for future top ups but that is hugely inconvenient.

From the IRD website...

"If you supply goods and services to another GST-registered person, you must provide a tax invoice within 28 days of the purchaser asking for one. It is an offence if you don't supply one after such a request and you may be charged penalties."

So I'd say they have to give you one for the top up purchase.... sure its just not a grumpy CSR you got ? :)

Update : Ah... they might not have to :

"

Supplies of $50 or less

A tax invoice is not needed for supplies of $50 or less (including GST). However, it is best practice to keep records for these purchases, such as invoices, vouchers or receipts. At a minimum, record the date, description, cost and supplier of all purchases."

I tried calling about 5 times and always got told different things. I got through to their revenue and accounting department and they maintain that providing a gst receipt for the monthly usage is adequate. However this wont be ok with my works credit card reporting.

It is a huge pain. It means that my work will have issues reporting the expense.

Really not happy with 2 Degrees on this.

Prepay GST receipts used to be given for topups. However we have changed the way *we* report GST to the IRD, and so GST statements are now given on *usage* not Topup.

They only have to when the goods and services are provided. Have a look at the rules around vouchers and prepaid. The money not used is considered a liability till its used.

We used to do this at my old biz, except there was no receipt till the service was rendered; which could be months away.

Its a way that 2degrees can write off any unused credit and not have to pay the gst :)

It is a real shame as we need a GST receipt for the top up. Now we will have to go to a store every few months and buy one.
