First post for a while so bear with me.

All of a sudden on Saturday morning my internet\phone died. I have a new fibre connection (2 weeks old) with Huawei ont and fritzbox. I have made the appropriate escalations with Snap and am waiting to hear from the tech's (Downer's) to come out, which will cost me $270 if the tech finds no issue with their equipment. Nothing has changed from my end it is a new house and the fibre is all in conduit right up to the fibre termination point (ftp).

What i am trying to find out is has anyone else had a problem where their fibre connection just stops, and did you get charged $270 from Snap. Symptoms:
Power solid green
LOS led on ONT flashing red
PON led no light
LAN1 led solid green
No visible light coming down the fibre out of the ftp (can't actually remeber if i could see this when in was working).

Uhhh, don't look into the fiber dude, that's just dumb.  If the ONT has no connection and you've rebooted it, it's definitely their problem so don't stress about it.

The light coming out of the fibre is not visable but VERY dangerous to your eye.

Never ever look directly into an end of the fibre.

I did not look in it you could see light coming out i think around where the fibre was connected out of the ftp. not directly in the fibre i realise this would be stupid.

edit, I may have been dreaming about the light coming out of the FTP can't remember

Did you used to stick the wires across you touch to see if there was "voltage on the line" whenever your ADSL or phone line failed? -No?,

Then dont unplug the fibre an look at it :)

I wont carry on with the dont look into fibre - but there is no visable (to the eye) light signal coming out of an active fibre either from the side or end on.

Now back to your situation - Yes this does happen - sometimes by mistaked - plug in connections get pulled out that shouldnt or weren't quite 'clicked' in the first place and slowly vibrate out / or splices get broken or have to be remade when parts of the network have to be rearranged.

Sorting out a broken /misconnection is not charged to you. (Unless damage is attributed to you)

The ONT belongs to the LFC and is not part of your equipment and serviceing/replaceing if faulty is not charged to you .

If the fault lies with the RGW (router) this is considered to be part of your equipment and the service charge from Chorus will be charged to your provider / On chargeing to you is up to your provider (that is why they warn you of this)

Here is a table of what each of the ligths mean. Looks like the fibre signal to the ONT has stopped working.

Did you let Snap know that the fibre had been unplugged? The end of the fibre will likely need to be cleaned by the tech as any oils, etc on it will possibly degrade, or stop, the service.

Ok so what really happen is the OP was trying to build a laser canon with his fibre connection, but instead it reflected back on itself blowing the whole fibre cabinet to bits. Only a master filter can fix this now :)

We, as geekzone, should write a fictional story using all of this geekzone slang. It would be awesome!

So how much actual laser power is used in these fibre connections ? You could measure that in metric laser canons, but mW would likely be more useful!

Is that a GPON thing as I've many a time seen 'red' down fiber, either directly out of an SFP or out the end of fiber plugged into an SFP/+, both SR and LR.
Not suggesting the red light is the actual signal, just that light is visible.

Generaly the 'red' visable light is there as a low power trace signal just for that purpose and isnt part of the actual signaling frequenceys / This trace signal can be 'seen' by differnt methods one of which is not should never be by looking directly at it with the naked eye (as you can never tell what else may be pulseing down the fibre) - the current GPON SFPs dont transmit a trace.

SFP = Small Form Factor Transmitters similar to what is commonly known as GBIC modules for Switchs
