We're having Orcon VDSL installed on Monday and already have a perfectly good dual-band router.  It appears that the Orcon Genius can be used in bridge mode as a VDSL modem, but could I just use a stand alone modem instead?

We already have an ATA device so are not concerned about the Genius phone line.

You could use another modem if you like, we don't provide any support for other modems/routers, but I can find out what the settings are.

I'd suggest you stand it up with the Genius (white) to start with and make sure the service is working before switching to another modem.

Another option would be to use the Genius as a router and switch your dual-band router to AP mode.  But it's up to you.

Thanks, yes I'll start with the Genius router and see how that goes, and I'll set up the existing router as an AP in the meantime so that the 20 odd wireless devices in the house don't need to have their settings changed!

Just be sure to disable wireless on the Genius :) all the best!  I'll check if you need any special settings for another modem on Monday and post in here.

The install is done (another story) and I'm using the Asus router as an AP.  I did try the Genius wireless, but N really doesn't perform until it's on 5 GHz.  But I knew that already.

I'll leave it like this for a few weeks but having had a quick look at the Genius UI, my preference would be to go back to the Asus.

Here goes!  We will not provide support for anything other than the provided modem, and cannot warrant that it will work well or even at all.  Must have an NZ Telepermit of course.

If you have problems with your service and need to contact the helpdesk, please reconnect the provided modem first :)

With that out of the way, you'll need to configure the following:

G.994.1 auto sensing or VDSL
PPPoE
802.1Q tag traffic with VLAN 10 on the WAN interface
802.1P tag traffic with 0 on the WAN interface
Auth type is PAP
You need to extract the username and password out of the modem (there's a tut somewhere on Geekzone about this)

Good luck!
