Dunedin Halfway Bush exchange. Total Orcon outage.
Website Network status shows "Due to vendor backhaul issue... may experience packet loss and some voice impact Wellington Christchurch Dunedin Timaru Queenstown. No ETR from vendor as yet."

Well since I'm completely without service on our Genius, I call help desk and am informed; "...there is an upgrade in your area in progress at the moment. We don't know when it will be completed."

I'm astounded and frankly disbelieving they would do this in the middle of the day on a stat holiday without imforming anyone, when most people will be at home wanting to use internet and phone. Absolute crap service!! Time to look for another provider I think. Anyone suggest a better provider or are they all tarred with the same brush of arrogance.

Dunedin is out due to a vendor circuit between Christchurch and Dunedin being down, NOT an upgrade at all. I've sent an appropriate message to our contact centre staff.

So does the call centre just make up a story when they don't know? That just makes them look even worse.

would that also effect christchurch? because pinging my orcon gateway is just about 200ms and extremely slow. Only since today its like this from what i noticed

We have known issues between Hamilton and Wellington that will affect everything South of Hamilton, in addition we have a known issue between Chch and Dunedin that means Dunedin is down for all services.

In addition to that there is a large landslip just North of Kaikoura which may further complicate matters. Biggest issue seems to be getting vendor techs to the faults given the conditions and damage to the roads.

Hamilton<->Wellington is back up so service to Chch should restore.

The link to Dunedin is still out with no ETR unfortunately, it is a fibre cut under a railway that is flooded. Techs will make an attempt to access at 10pm but it <may> need to wait for daylight and the flooding to reduce.

Internet seems to have been restored in Dunedin. That was pretty unbearable.

Dunedin restored on a temporary bypass that the team built, service came up about 2:30, and is stable now but congested although the team aare working on that too. The prime circuits down there are cut in multiple places with access complicated by flooding. No ETR on the prime circuits at this time.

The guys have managed to get some more capacity for the backup link so it looks like we have enough for a normal service until the fibre cuts are repaired - still no ETR on that.

out of curiosity, what have they done to build a backup link and increase capacity on it?

If you have to run heating in winter, you don’t own enough computers.

We had senior technical staff on the 7am AKL to Dunedin flight taking some additional equipment that let us patch across some capacity from another carrier whose link was working, coordinated work in AKL brought a working link up.

If so then it must have affected Vodafone and maybe Snap as well? And how was it cut, by a contractor or a slip? The fibre goes across a rail bridge. The rail bridge was under floodwater....

But the same East Coast fibre route was cut in at least 2 more places by landslips....Last report I had was that there were 20+ major cable/fibre cuts in the region as a result of the weather event.
