I recently signed up for UFB with Orcon and the accompanying VoIP service. I had a Fritz!Box 7390 from my previous install and wanted to use this rather than the supplied modem. I just got the VoIP service working but couldn't find a good guide to this so am posting some instructions for others.

Firstly, the Orcon UFB service requires the MAC address of the connected device to be that associated with the modem they rented to you. So connecting the UFB service requires configuring the Fritz device to use this MAC address.

Log into the Fritz > Internet > Account Information and fill out like so, making sure to put in the MAC address from the supplied router:

For the VoIP settings, head to Telephony > Telephone Numbers > Line Settings Tab.
Fill out the location info then head down to voice packets.

Your username will be your number with no leading zero, e.g. 39741120
Your password is not the same as your UFB/account password; I found mine by emailing the help desk and asking for my SIP username and password.

Hit apply.

Head to the telephone numbers tab > new telephone number.

Put in internet number and user name as previously, e.g. 39741120, and your SIP password as well.

Put sip1.orcon.net.nz as the registrar, leave STUN server blank (not sure if Orcon has a STUN server or if this is needed). Hit OK and jump through the hoops. After being added you can edit the numbers settings although I'm not sure if there is anything else to configure here.

Lastly head to Telephony > Telephony Devices > Configure New Device.
Telephone > Next, FON1 > Next, Intercept all and so on (should be straightforward).

Wallah! Seemed to work fine for me after this process with both ingoing and outgoing working. There are surely some other little tweaks that might be useful but this got me up and running.

Just to add

 

  • Its not our policy to give out Genius SIP passwords, this case will be investigated as to how it happened.
  • We obviously don't support any non-Genius devices.
  • If you spoof our device by copying its mac address, and our TR-69 platform carries out any action that causes any issue with the non-Genius device (e.g. attempts to load a firmware update), then in the event of it causing a problem with the device, we aren't responsible. (note it is highly unlikely any Genius firmware would load onto a non-Genius device but it IS possible that the device would accept our TR-69 instruction to update, download the firmware and that may cause an issue on the non-Genius device depending on how well it handles such a situation).
  • No, it isn't possible for us to block TR-69 actions per account or mac address so please don't ask.
  • If you need any issues resolving please replace the Genius device and ensure the issue still exists prior to logging any support calls.

All points understandable.

Regarding point 1, it is my understanding that you can get the SIP password through downloading the router config anyway - I was actually surprised when support straight up gave me the username/password but I certainly thank them for doing so.

For my situation I took this approach as I already have better equipment and don't want to pay $120/year to use inferior prescribed equipment, or have it sitting in a cupboard. I only really want the UFB service so having the VoIP info shrouded in secrecy is a bit annoying (I could forgo the $10 rental and just pay for a 3rd party VoIP sub...). I'm sure many others with their own gear can empathise.

Hey, good to see another geek replacing the genius!

I tried to get my passwords out of the helpdesk, and they were supremely unhelpful. This is, of course, because of their policy. So, I found a way to extract them.

I'll see if I can get that stickied so others don't have to chase up a CS rep willing to break rules.

EDIT: Worth mentioning that Orcon requires VLAN 10 tagging on the WAN port. I guess this was left over from your Snap config?
