I'm am interested in switching to snap VDSL, since my contract with my current ISP has expired. I'm wondering however, if the fritzbox 7490 is very far away from being available? I recently got a laptop with 802.11ac networking, so it kinda make sense to wait for it, if it isn't far away.

I see that there was a post here (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=90&topicid=138076) in december asking about this, that went unanswered, and also that someone asked on the snap Facebook page in late january, that was responded to saying that snap was hoping to be able to start testing it in the next couple of months.

if the wifi on the 7490 is anything like the 7390 and 7360 I wouldnt wait for this router. the 7390/7360 are great routers, they just have very very poor wifi. I just bought a apple airport express and use that for my wifi.

The WiFi on the Fritzs are great they just don't have great coverage. In a big-ish house you will need another AP to get decent 5GHz coverage.

the coverage i get on my 7390 is about 10m from the fritzbox, going through 1 insulated wall (pink batts). my airport express covers my entire house for most devices (my old s3 didnt work after about 20m from the airport express, nexus 5 does).

Where is the cheapest place to buy a Fritz from? I have checked ebay but Snap remains the cheapest place.

Yep, I use an Airport Base Station with 802.11n though run it only in the 2.4GHz mode as its the older version which does not have dual antenna
the Apple Airport hubs have always been rock solid for me and have had better range than others I have tried.

How great is the price difference currently? I'd be happy having to pay a small amount more than the 7390, in order to be more future proof and avoid having to potentially upgrade at a later date.

Thanks for the info. Our house is fairly small, and we primarily use the wifi from in the same room as the base station, so based on what chevrolux said, hopefully it shouldn't be too much of an issue. I also have an older base station that I can put down the other end of the house, where speed would be less of an issue, if necessary.

Skip it and buy something like an Engenius EAP350 for ~ $200. AC Wireless has less range but better speeds.
