Hi,

Tomorrow the Chorus guys are coming to install VDSL, so I have been looking on Geekzone for stuff releating to VDSL. I have found that you need a line attenuation ~10.5. So I had a look at my router stats and it says that i have a 22.5dB attenuation. Would it even be worth getting VDSL or would this be my home wiring (looks pretty dodgy imo)? Is there any way to test my attenuation from outside? I guess I will find out tomorrow.

Just wait for them to attempt an install, that'll tell you if you can get VDSL or not.

The Tech will install a master filter/splitter and isolate the house wiring from the VDSL signal. Once he has done that you will see what the state of the line is...I would think it prequalled at lower than 22.5dB TBH.

If you have a downstream attenuation of 22.5dB with a master filter, the prognosis for VDSL is not good.

Yeah, I guess I will just wait and see. I still think it is the house wiring though, although I am not sure.

Out of curiosity are you in an estimated VDSL coverage area on this map: http://www.chorus.co.nz/network-upgrade-map ?

(To tell if you're in their estimated VDSL coverage area it will display ">20 Mbps" at the bottom after you enter your address)

Yes, but I am on the very edge of coverage. (Sorry for the second screen)



Also, FYI I sync at 15.2/1

By who? Whoever did it should the have told you that you may have a fault on the internal wiring....

Anyhow lets see what the tech finds...

I installed myself, and I didn't have a look at the internal wiring, just shoved it in the wall. Worth it though, went from syncing at 7/.5 to 15/1.

haha, yeah. By shoving it in the wall I meant that I connected it well and properly but it is in the wall so I do not think that the filter is the source of the attenuation.

But when he left he forgot to switch us back onto ADSL2+ or he forgot to tell Orcon not to put us on VDSL2. We had no phone line or internet but I could still authenticate to Orcon within my router diagnostics. I am back on ADSL2+ now but  it would have been nice not to go through that hassle. Thanks.

Given that a full install and technician visit is mandatory for VDSL weren't you warned that you needed to be home??? He would have needed to switch you to VDSL, likely he then came and tested sync at the ETP before determining you should be rolled back as he couldn't get any better sync rate than on ADSL. Now if you had been home there could have been a case for a quick isolation of the house wiring and retest.....

Apart from you not being there that is how it is supposed to work but I am concerned you weren't warned to be home.

I'm pretty sure we were switched over to the VDSL2 profile as we had no internet, the router could authenticate to the PPP servers and we had no phone line (as naked VDSL over VoIP)
