I've been trying to downgrade from 5.51 to 5.22/23 using the link from VDSL Performance & Tuning, the Fritz Downgrading Guide and from reading some forum posts here.

My issue is that no matter what firmware i use i am being prompted after the update has failed saying that the firmware is older than what is currently in use.  Do i need to modify the .image file before trying to update?

for the most part, this. AVM upgraded the bootloader, it could be manually downgraded, but clearly rather.. risky...

give the 5.23 firmware a try, i have heard some recent success storys with it. (its 5.22 with the patch for the security flaw)

AVM sent me a link (here) to downgrade my 7390 back to version 5.23 for the purposes of restoring SMB which they removed with 6.01. So this is an officially sanctioned downgrade. I haven't tried it yet but see no reason why it shouldn't work.

How about upgrade to 6.xx and then downgrade to 5.23?

Hmm, where's the edit button gone?

I tried the downgrade from 6.03 (I think that's what I'm on) to 5.23 and it wouldn't let me. Hmmm odd.

I was able to downgrade my Fritz 7340 from 6.01 to 5.23, glad I was cheap and got the low cost option :P

Does 6.06 fix the problems you have with 6.03?
