Hi,

Starting at about 1pm this afternoon my internet pretty much died, and it is so slow it is unusable. My ping skyrocketed to 1323ms and my download is .32mbps. I have restarted my router multiple times but still, insanely slow. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Thanks.

given the ping and download speed.. ild suspect your lines being clogged up with traffic.

Good call, his line checks out but his upstream is being hammered, he's investigating that now...

Seems to be a very common problem with people moving to unlimited plans - they just leave their torrents seeding and like many of the similar posts on here don't understand how TCP works.

Quick check today shows you are back to normal/historical upload volumes so hopefully your download performance has recovered to normal as well.

Hi,

Yeah, it has gone back to normal speeds. I am still not sure why it was that low, as I do not torrent things.

Thanks for your help.

My working assumption is that a machine on your network has downloaded a DVD ISO or similar and that has been made available for others by the download software, hence when they access it, your upload gets maxxed. If you are not sure what it was then it could easily happen again...

Yeah, maybe. I might look through all the PCs in the house and just check.

When you have a TCP connection, traffic is sent in both directions (to maintain the connection, and acknowledge receipt of packets).  A reply packet is expected for every x amount of data (this amount varies depending on a number of factors).

As a result of this, when your upstream bandwidth is saturated/slow, it ultimately limits your capacity to download data or even establish a TCP connection.  Likewise high latency (since the sender will wait for acknowledgement before sending more data).

Hope that explains it sufficiently.

Yeah, it's happening again. Not to the same extent though, but still high ping and low up/down. https://www.speedtest.net/result/3625311611.png. I'm syncing at 15Mbps down.

How many devices are connected ? Turn them all off/disconnect except your own and see if the issue remains... if it comes right, its one of those other devices.

If you only have one device connected and its doing it, I'd suspect youve got some malware or similar running - install a bandwidth meter on your system and check what it shows is going out.

Found the problem, thanks. My mum was uploading all her pictures and documents to OneDrive.
