Hello - a long time ago - I signed up for Orcons free email for life and have been using it to this day, a few years ago I added Genius broadband and now I am wanting to leave for greener grasses
(but happy to stay if they offer VDSL 80GB and phone foR $75 as I can get this with vodafone 80Gb naked vdsl (with onaccount number) + 2talk line)

My question is when my new provider disconnects my orcon connection - will my email disappear too???

I don't want to sound stupid, but isn't that exactly what 'free email for life' means. I.e. That you keep it regardless of whether you are with orcon for broadband or not.

My understanding was that anyone from any ISP could signup to that email address for life. I recall signing up to one many years ago before it was sold, although I wouldn't have a clue what it is now.

That was many many moons ago... I finished up with Orcon a few weeks ago, and my email is still active - however, I havent returned my router yet so theyre "billing" me for it until its returned, so maybe because the account is active, the email is left for now as well.... soon as I return the router the email may stop.

- I've had an Orcon address as my main Email for many years... been to many different ISPs in that time, currently back with Orcon but if I leave again I expect to keep using the email as I always have...

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

Orcon is my main email address - I dont want to lose it from Orcon not letting us know if they cancel it or not as part of the move process

Rather buy your own domain name and pay Google to host it for $5/mo. It's not free, but it is yours, they give you some other nice-to-have stuff for the $5 and you can have it forever as it's your own domain name, regardless of what ISP goes out of business, is sold on etc. $5 is hardly a big fee.

I have an Orcon mail address for life and also a Gmail and Outlook one just in case they change their policy when they get sold again..

I don't see a point anymore to having multiple accounts. The NSA, marketing people and others all know those email addresses are all you, so the overhead will be with you, rather than anywhere else and certainly with your friends and relatives who will in all likleyhood not have three email addresses on hand for you. In fact, I'd argue consolidating everything into a single point of administration and contact is better sense. Orcon have a great deal and I don't want to detract from that but if Orcon goes broke, get's sold or the way domains work changes in years to come, you likely won't have an @Orcon.co.nz account anymore.

Your own domain is customisable, cheap to have, maintain and manage but more importantly, it's portable.

Both services have 0800 numbers and wizard driven experiences but if you want help with either, I suggest you start a new thread here so that others can help.

I recall both services have a trial of a week or more, I would suggest you trial each one, but remember that your domain may have restrictions as to how often it can be moved around.

If you are not too tech savvy, you can get some help from an IT expert or contractor for around $90 - $120 depending on how many devices you want setup or how much email you wish to import/transfer. If this is you, don't forget to mention where you live so that somebody can come out and help you with ease, I am in Hamilton and can offer these services out of hours.
