Even though I'm with Telecom just had an update on my Galaxy S4 which enables 4G with 2degrees. They were running the 4G trial in Auckland so they must be nearing roll out to general public if the 4G setting update is being pushed to 4G enabled phones.

Yeah, I got the 4G capability update on my 2Degrees Galaxy S4 today also. Thankfully I've stockpiled around 5GB of data - all ready to let loose.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz

I just got a carrier update that gives an "Enable LTE" option on my iPhone 5s. To force the update you can go into Settings -> General -> About and then it should pop up. Excited for 4G! Just worried about using up my 500MB monthly data too quickly :)

4G rocks! I'm with telecom and did a speedtest on 4G got 80 down and 27 up! Wish they had unlimited data plans so I could hotspot my s4 to the xbox one. Will be great for 2degrees customers to get 4G when they start rolling it out publicly

Unlimited data on mobiles will not happen. There is not unlimited radio spectrum to support this.

One of my work colleagues was showing me speedtest.net results on his 4g telecom phone, he stopped pretty quickly when he noticed each test was consuming 100MB of data!

May not get unlimited data, but definitely going to need a lift in data caps / plans.

Good news is companies like NSN are promising that with advances in radio technology that they'll have networks capable of supporting 1GB per user per day by 2020.

Wireless is a finite resource and needs to be treated as such.

LTE and GSM can coexist in the same spectrum

Chinese equipment vendor Huawei has showcased what it claims is the world’s first successful implementation of a Dynamic Spectrum Sharing technology trial with Vodafone Spain, that will allow LTE and GSM to coexist in the same spectrum. Although carrier aggregation technologies hold significant promise for maximising spectrum resources, it’s clear that many operators will be wedded to GSM for years to come and this approach leaves both LTE and GSM free to use the same spectrum.

GSM-LTE Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (GL DSS) is able to improve LTE capacity by up to 50 per cent by maximising wireless spectrum usage, the vendor said. Several operators, including Vodafone, currently hold bandwidths of 20MHz at 1.8GHz, of which 10MHz is used for LTE and the rest for high GSM traffic.
So at Vodafone’s Mobile Access Competence Center in Spain, Huawei tweaked its Single Radio Controller (SRC) that was released in 2013, to bring flexibility to spectrum resource allocation by introducing GL DSS. By applying interference scheduling in real time, the SRC gives GSM higher priority to use spectrum in periods of heavy traffic, providing protection against GSM voice interference. SRC also provides more spectrum for LTE compared to the standard fixed configuration through dynamic allocation; allowing for better LTE throughput.
According to the pair, the trial verified GL DSS performance in the Vodafone-Spain commercial network, with results showing that this solution can reach LTE capacity gains of up to 50 per cent, making 15MHz effectively available for LTE with limited impact to GSM services.

Unlimited data on mobiles will not happen. There is not unlimited radio spectrum to support this.

Someone will try it eventually. We've had naysayers claiming that unlimited fixed broadband was a really bad idea and would never happen, and now most telcos offer it. No natural resource is infinite, but unlimited doesn't mean "no shaping" or "it will always be really fast."

Yes, they already have; they did it in the states, it was a disaster, and they don't do it any more.

Except that fixed line bandwith is not a natural resource. It's a direct result of how many fibres you put in the ground, and you can keep adding more forever. Nobody's making new electromagnetic spectrum.

Haha IIRC with Apple carrier updates, it's pushed out to everyone on a compatible iOS, but will only enable LTE on capable devices.

Just noticed today there's an LTE toggle in my settings! Recently moved to 2degrees and the biggest let down is how much slower data is compared to Voda 4G. Hopefully this helps.

Nope the 4S is not a LTE phone. You need a 5, 5S or 5C.
