2degrees redefines roaming for Kiwis visiting Australia
2degrees is redefining how kiwis use their mobiles across the Tasman by launching New Zealand’s lowest casual roaming rates in Australia*.

From today, all 2degrees’ Pay Monthly and Business customers can use their mobiles across the Tasman without hesitation with 2degrees’ 10/10/10 plan – where customers pay only 10 cents per minute for calls within Australia and to New Zealand, 10 cents per text and 10 cents per MB of data.

In addition, 2degrees will also be launching Australian 7-day data roaming packs for all 2degrees customers (including Prepay) later this month. Packs include 300MB for $10 or 500MB for $15.

Chief Marketing Officer Malcolm Phillipps says 2degrees created competition in Trans-Tasman roaming in 2011 when it halved the cost of data roaming rates and these new rates mean customers no longer have to worry about using their mobile when visiting Australia.

“We know that people are still cautious when it comes to using their mobiles in Australia and often turn them off or only use them when they have access to WiFi. We want to change that by making roaming simple and affordable.” he says.

“More than 70% of the travel by Kiwis is to Australia so we have focused our attention on roaming across the Tasman first. Whether it’s the basics of calls, texts or emails, using social media or searching online, customers can now roam in Australia without the fear of bill shock when they return.”

Mr Phillipps says 2degrees customers can go about their daily business in Australia just like they would at home.

“We’ve looked at our customer’s average daily mobile usage in New Zealand and using our new Australian roaming rates, it would cost $3.84 per day for our Business customers and $3.69 per day for our Pay Monthly customers to do the same things in Australia they do here in an average day.

The launch of our new 7-day data packs later this month will also mean customers can use data for an effective rate of only 3cents/MB when in Australia and they have an entire week to use it.

Our 10/10/10 proposition means we now have New Zealand’s lowest casual roaming rates in Australia and our customers are fully in control.”

Mr Phillipps says 2degrees’ new roaming rates will automatically be applied to all Pay Monthly and Business customers when they land in Australia as long as roaming is enabled on their device.

Just get a local prepay SIM, way cheaper and loads of data and unlimited text and calls depending on who you go with
Was there in may, got an Optus prepay sim, topped it up and got 500 MB a day! Plus it's 4G

That is fine for an iPad, but not for a phone as a foreign SIM will prevent people from being able to call you on your NZ number.

I personally think this is a great announcement.

We do this every time we pop over across the Tasman. They usually have a kiosk at the airport and it's quick and easy to set up and great value.

For those business travellers that need to be contacted whilst overseas however, this is great news - Now that Vodafone and 2Degrees have released some positive Australia roaming charges, I will be curious to see what Telecom Spark will come out with next, as $10/day for data, 49c/$1 per min for receiving/making calls and 80c a text message is now horrendous in comparison.

I sim swapped to Optus too as this wasn't a problem for me. But in hindsight if i travelled a lot, i'd get a hotspot for this.
Or if i didn't want to carry two devices i'd consider picking up a budget dual sim smartphone like the Moto G being sold by skinny (at WHS), which can be had for ~$250 on special, and use my regular sim and international sim at the same time.

Wait, that's what Telecom charges?  So THAT'S how I got a $200 roaming bill!

Interesting that 2d has opted not to follow the Vodafone model of allowing you to roam your local calling/texting/data for a charge instead.  In my view that's actually a far better deal.

That depends on your usage - if it's $5 per day while overseas then your minimum cost for a week's holiday is $35.  WIth the 2degrees pack, you can pay $15, use eg skype for all your calls while overseas and it's very good value.  I think this is a great move by 2d
