Hi,

I am trying to get the company I work for to switch over from Telecom to 2Degrees. To cut a long story short Australia don't think the 2Degrees network is up to the job and it is a battle to convince them :(

In the mean time I want to get some Telecom Data Sticks moved over to 2 Degrees. Most of these data sticks use 850 and 2100MHZ.

My understanding is that 2 Degrees have only recently rolled out extended 3G on 900MHZ so these data sticks should in theory work ok? especially in the 3 main centres where they will be used (AKL, WEL and CHCH)

Is this theory sound or are we going to have to invest in some new data sticks?

Most of 2degrees 3G sites have 900 and 2100. The telecom sticks will likely be 850/2100 3G (plus legacy GSM). You will only be able to connect at 2100 at 3G. They should be OK for high coverage areas, but in poor coverage areas you could drop down to 2G GSM at 900 (EDGE). They will work, but the experience would be better if you had sticks that support both 900 and 2100 if you are going to use 2degrees, but you should be mostly OK in AKL/WLG/CHC

We have 2100 everywhere, and 900 in most places. A stick that doesn't do 900 will still work on our network, but won't benefit from the better coverage that 900 provides. As for whether 2degrees is 'up to the job'... well, every network has it's strengths and weaknesses. Certainly your mileage may vary, but unless you're out in the middle of nowhere all the time - where everybody's coverage is less than optimal - then I don't think there's any question about whether or not we can deliver.

I'd recommend you invite your Aussie colleagues over to try it, but their roaming costs to come here would be astronomically higher than your 2degrees roaming costs to go over there. :-D

Thanks guys. I suspected as much. We will primarily be using them at the main airports so I think they should be okay. We do have some which use 900 as well as 850.

For me 2 degrees is a no-brainer I have been using them for years, we make a lot of NZ -> Aus calls and also have a lot of data roaming in Aussie so 2 Degrees is a very attractive proposition.

I think they are in the mindset that Vodafone is cr*p in Australia and Telstra is the only network worth using and applying this to NZ and Telecom.

I am offering myself and my team up for a trial of 2 degrees, hopefully I can convince them :)

The other problem is that IT have locked us into some horrific Telecom contracts which I am trying to unwind but that is a different story.

Well, I'm an engineer, not a sales guy, but if you tell your account manager the gory details they will be keen to provide at least some assistance with getting out of the Telecom contracts. And if you don't have an account manager then PM me and I'll get you in touch with one.

I've used 2D SIMs in Telecom T-Sticks with no problem..
