Anyone using the Genius White with their own firewall?

I'm due to renew my orcon contract next month and I'm considering moving from POTS to Genius, especially if I can get VDSL (sadly fibre isn't an option).

Key requirements

  1. Run my own firewall

    • Netgear R7000 using dd-wrt tomato
  2. Able to support existing phone jacks in house
  3. Work with alarm without an expensive upgrade

Now for (1) I need to be able to run the modem in some sort of a bridge mode so it doesn't manage the firewall. Anyone got a good guide on this or done it recently? I've noticed an old GZ guide but it doesn't mention if the ATA ports keep working

For (2) my modem will be no where near where we keep our answer phone + wireless phone base station. Has anyone tried wiring the ATA port off the Genius back into the house phone wiring?

Also if I can use the existing in wall cabling I can probably keep using my existing alarm setup (3).

I know where the master splitter is and if I can switch to VDSL I probably want the modem as close as possible to the splitter which is in the garage. Anyone else have the modem in the garage but the rest of their wiring elsewhere in a house without good structured cabling?

I'd love to re-cable the house properly, but that is atleast 6-12 months away.

Alarm over VoIP is a no go area. If you want monitoring you'll need to move to IP.

Ands before anybody buts in with a "but it works for me" sort of comments, yes it can work. But something that may work 98% of the time is not a solution.

Best option is to use your own device as the modem and firewall. The genius can tag on to this either by creating your own vlan or turning off vlan in the genius. (I do the first so the genius is running as default)

Yes, you can feed the phone port into your home phone wiring, so long as it's isolated from the street, obviously.

For the alarm, get a mobile dialer.

So with this combination I could still use the voice ports on the Genius, but my own Modem would handle the ADSL termination.

Problem is going to VDSL would require a new modem, and I'd like to use the Orcon one if possible.
