I have just switched to 2degrees and want to bring my Vodafone number with me, but I get this warning when going to the "Bring your number" section:

  • If you are moving your number from Vodafone, you may not be able to reliably receive texts sent from these overseas networks: Vodafone UK, Vodafone Ireland, Vodafone Germany, T-Mobile USA and SFR (Vodafone France). We are having difficulty getting an agreement with those networks to allow some transferred numbers to receive some texts from customers of those networks.

This seems like it could be an issue with various services that authenticate via SMS. Is this a real problem I have to worry about, and should I not port my number from Vodafone?

Porting causes problems with all networks, in part due to the way SMS works.

My  wife's number is ported from Vodafone and has no issues with Google 2-factor auth or any other similar services.

my ported number (2 years since) works fine for Blizzard, webmail, Google, UK banking and other 2 factor authentication...

maybe just a scare tactic to keep you from doing so?

My Vodafone number went to 2degrees then Spark over a period of a couple of years.
I initially had a few issues receiving texts from Google/Facebook, but no issues in the last 18 months.

My 021 on 2degrees used to not receive Twitter, FB, etc but all are fine now while in NZ. While roaming in the US recently some 2FA services worked, some didn't, some did but delayed a few hours.

Can someone explain why?

Is this your IMSI being stored somewhere

My work had my number ported from Voda to Spark, then accidentally back to Vodafone then back to Spark

I struggle to receive Google 2FA and SMS requests from Uber etc and I wonder if this is it.

Salty wrote a good post on here a couple of years ago explaining in depth about SMS and how it's routed between carriers.

Yes. And although it's been 5 years for us now, and most services and operators are now able to deal with us without problems, all that is still true and occasionally we come across an issue.

Took the plunge with the porting of the number, will be sure to update you on my misfortunes after this one... ;)

The process of signing up and activating subscription and then porting the number with 2degrees was anything but smooth. I would seriously look into their process flow and systems for that, it seems to require quite a few calls to the support centre to get right.
