Ok so my Orcon account is up for renewal shortly. I'm considering a move to VOIP so can I move my home number to VOIP and keep my ADSL account with Orcon? Is there a sensible way to move your phone number to a new provider without causing your internet provider to disconnect you?

I'd prefer not to go with the Genius offering from Orcon as I want to run a real firewall rather than the genuis device, and their calling rates are to high compared with typical voip providers.

Any thoughts / recommendations?

You can't have ADSL service with us without a phone number unfortunately.  And a port request will likely trigger termination of the entire service due to this.

I'd suggest just getting a VoIP service with a new number.  If you need to get your calls that come in on your Orcon number, just forward your Orcon number to the new number.

Sadly I need an alternative solution.

I don't want to carry the cost of forwarding all my calls to an alternative number, and I don't want outbound calls on a new number.

My ideal is

  • Naked Broadband on ADSL/VDSL
  • Existing phone number ported to VOIP provider

Surely there is a way to do this?

Against the T&Cs but have had less cutouts with Asterisk and a PAP2T

Surely since Orcon are effectively selling a Naked product with Genius they could simply allocate you a number for the service and you could port your number elsewhere?

I asked on Twitter and they said they could, so it must be possible.
