Hi..

This is sure to be mentioned somewhere but the forum has got so big that after searching for 10 minutes I have given up...

I am trying to figure out the best & easiest way to plug my external HD into the USB port on my Fritzbox router to share across the network...

On my old router this was easy enough, I plugged it into the USB port and then mapped the drive for it to H: or something and then you could access it under the windows network..

Or something... Its been 2 years now...

But for Fritz I cant seem to do this, or find any information on the web as of how to best do this..

I see something about the storage NAS but I didn't get much traction there.. And yeah... I hit a brick wall about 6 months ago doing it, and left it.. But its a damn pain having to plug the external HD into different devices to watch the media on it...

Anyone with a good handle on this, or a link to some instructions I would really appreciate the help.

What OS is your fritz running?

IIRC in 5.0 support for SMB (windows file sharing) was removed.

They removed the functionality from the 06.xx firmware, and I don't think they've really given a good reason for it. Unfortunately, there's no way to bring that functionality back. You can FTP files to and from it, but it's not as convenient as a file share.

Even if it does work, you might find it quite slow. I was only getting speeds of 1MBps, when I've had the same external drive doing 13MBps plugged directly into a computer. It's not the network either - I'm able to completely saturate my WiFi connection when writing a NAS plugged into the router.

Can confirm this is the case with me too. Do not recommend doing this with the Fritz. Such a shame they could screw up such a useful feature like this.

not sure what you are doing, but im running OS6.06 and have my HD connected and working on my network. mind you i couldnt get it to work untill i upgraded to 6.01 . i use the HD as a answer phone for VOIP so it all works.

I will upgrade my firmware and see what happens then.

It's possible that the functionality was added back in to a 06.xx firmware release, but I haven't seen anything in the release notes.

As an aside, it looks like a 06.20 release might be imminent, and it'll add a bunch of new stuff. It's currently only available in German, so hopefully an English version is in the works.

But they do also give a link to get a firmware image that has SMB with the security fixes.

i dont want to risk my bits being slowed down because someone has a bright idea to shove a external hdd in..

really worth while?

as bad as it is, Ild expect the router to manage slightly better than the Pi.... The 100mbit port seems like a bit of a limitation there.
