I recently moved into a new house on the outskirts of Hamilton. The only option available is ADSL1. The house is about 500m away from the cabinet. The house is brand new and I had the wiring done professionally. The performance is extremely inconsistent and mostly poor. Downloading and surfing are generally fine but it is extremely frustrating to try and stream or game. There are periods when I can stream/game fine but others where it is impossible and I seem to have huge packet loss on the first and second hops.

I have tried 3 different modems and am currently using an ASUS DSL-N66U which is connected directly to my PC. We aren't using a phone line (Naked DSL) and haven't installed an alarm yet.

I was initially with Telecom and after logging a number of faults they advised me there was nothing wrong and nothing that could be done. I switched to Orcon and things were fine for a few weeks then degenerated. I logged a fault with them and ultimately was advised that the performance I was getting was as good as could be expected from my cabinet.

A trace taken at 10.30am today which is fairly normal:

Tracing route to www.orcon.net.nz [60.234.4.77]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

5 14 ms 13 ms 13 ms 60.234.4.77

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can improve the performance or I am stuck like this?

Have a read of those, There isnt much that can be done. Can you PM me the ID on the side of the cabinet or your rough street address and i can run it by my RBI upgrade list. I would have to also say thats a darn good trace route. no sign of congestion. 14ms to the host!

Cheers

dodjy: I seem to have huge packet loss on the first and second hops.

The second hop is our bng, they are configured to drop ping packets under many circumstances so tracert packet loss there doesn't indicate real-world traffic loss. Packet loss at the first hop indicates a possible wiring or cpe issue within your premises so it may be worth getting the house wiring checked again, professional work or not.

My mistake. Should read 2nd and 3rd hop. No issues with 1st hop.

I just ran some tests to the Oceanic Diablo 3 server. I am not exactly sure what they mean. The pathping results seem to show I am losing packets between my modem and the 2nd hop. Could this be an internal wiring issue? Or am I reading it wrong?

The only hop that matters is the last hop.

The rest are routers, which de-prioritize ICMP packets.

for being on a cabinet which is limited to adsl1, your tracerts are looking pretty decent actually..

orcons core gear deprioritized ICMP packets, so "packet loss" on those hops dont mean a lot at all.
