Hi,
Just a heads up for anyone checking out their data usage and freaking out for any unaccounted data usage.

I checked my usage today and freaked out when I saw over 500GB downloaded for this month already. I usually do around 30GB per month FYI.
Apparently I downloaded over 140GB yesterday despite not being home (and thus not going online).

I rang Orcon and to cut a long storey short, I've been informed that there is a bug with the data usage page that shows high data usage. Something to do with IPv6 and a bug with the stats collector (the CSR wasn't making complete sense on the matter).

I was ready to pull my connection before hearing this.

Any Orcon employee in the know care to comment?

As it stands, I've started my own monitoring - just in case!!!

Ive asked the team to look into it further, if it is that confusing we will probably take the display offline until resolved, it is a processing issue, not a measurement or accuracy issue.

By the by, the CSR (customer service representative) gave the impression he didn't know what IPv4 and IPv6 was - or at least he didn't know the difference between the two.
I shudder every time I have to go through the first line of defence!!

A little constructive feedback for ya ;)

No more issues with data usage reporting that I am aware of. Pm me your current "wierdness" and Ill have the team take a look

What about my concerns already posted? I am on IPV6 and experiencing concerning jumps in usage.

I replied:

"Given the spikes are tied to updates and other large but known data movements I'd suggest perhaps you have just had an update download restart, hanse it using more than the raw update. Syncing is a different matter, quite easy to use a lot of data on sync activities."

We have no general significant change in data reporting that I can see, your volumes appear to be related to known activity, even if the activity appears to generate more data usage than you expect from the raw file size, that does not necessarily mean the data accounting is wrong.

I'm happy to take further examples as above.

As PM'd I'm running this past the team, as we are all aware you aren't using Genius and have been in lots of discussion re ipv6 so there are several aspects of your connection that aren't standard that we will need to rule out.

Have you checked the SRX to see if it reports the data and if so what as? Does the Juniper download its own updates?

The SRX does not download any updates. No IDP or AV services sorry.
Really the SRX is just serving as a NAT device as the Genius doesn't perform NAT translations past it's immediate network correctly (as discussed previously).

Slight sidetrack - if you have a device that now does this (correctly), I'd rather switch to that.

Further to that, I've started switching off non essential machines and my wireless is now off (although my Ruckus zonedirector reports normal usage).

The team are still looking into it, strange that the pattern hasn't repeated since the password was changed.....

You mean my Orcon account password right? If so that is odd indeed!
Any immediate thoughts?

The only thing that uses that password as far as I'm aware (at my end) is a fetchmail process.

Yep, I can't correlate that to anything that could have changed the accounting or access.
