Got it as well... appears legit - however, giving customers 12-24hrs notice sucks.

Here is an extract from the legit email:

"Hi there,

Here at Orcon we’re constantly striving to improve the products and services that we offer our customers. The most recent is an update to the spam filtering that we use on our residential email service.

We can see that you still actively use your Orcon email service, so we wanted to let you know that from Tuesday 16th September 2014 we will be establishing “spam quarantine” as a default on all Orcon email services.

....

Should you have any questions then please give our helpdesk a call on 0800 13 14 15, they would be happy to assist.

Regards,

The Team @ Orcon."

So yes the setting is being changed tomorrow, the issue here is if we gave 30 days notice then the timeliness link between the comms and the action would be lost leading to greater confusion and queries. It is only the default behaviour that is being changed (from "Tag as spam but deliver to inbox" to "Move to Quarantine folder"), nothing fundamental to the email flow.

Many customers have already changed their setting to Quarantine since we launched the new Anti-Spam platform (the setting obviously won't be changed for them), any customer who prefers Tag as their setting can easily change it back if and when required.

HTH

Just a FYI FireEngine, I didn't get this email on my free for life Orcon email account, and I'm assuming it will impact us as well as your paying users?

I'm no longer a customer but got it.... but I'd say it'll be a global change for all Orcon accounts.

I'm told it went to all active email accounts without regard to paying status, PM me your account and I'll gladly check.

I would have thought in this day and age with the media and the like screaming "Phishing, don't click on any links that take you to a login page"  I would have thought that Orcon a well know ISP would not have put in a link that takes you to a login page and asks for your login and password in an email.  A better track would have been to ask people to go to Orcon, login into "My Orcon" got to "Email Settings"   then "Configure Spam Settings"   My M-in-Law rang up in a panic last nite over this , my wife also queried it..

Thanks for the feedback, I'll pass it onto the team that issued the email.

Checked with the team, they sent the email to any Orcon email account that had been accessed in the last 12months, the logic being if anyone hadn't then they probably weren't interested in spam settings for it.

They have taken on board to comments re the email content links etc and apologize for any worry or confusion caused.

Hmmm - passed this one to the team. Again though, this is simply changing the default spam setting to place spam in quarantine, nothing more dangerous.

Well that would explain why I didn't get it, if some ancient email address is still somehow attached to the account info my email account.

*edit* nope I just logged into orcon other than webmail for the first time in err 10+ years, and the email account showas as my gmail, which is still active and didn't get the email there either.

Just for arguments sake.. I check that account via pop/imap/webmail on a regular basis, but I hadn't actually logged into the "My Orcont" part of the website for something in the region of 10 years.

They did do this based on the activity of the EMAIL account, not logging into the My Orcon account right.. right? :-P

Yep, we track imap, pop, basic and advanced webmail access separately and should have taken the most recent timestamp on any method.
