On our website status:

"Due to a fibre cut between Hamilton and Wellington customers in Wellington and the South Island may experience slow throughput due to congestion. Vendor fibre engineers are investigating fibre repairs but have given no ETR as yet."

what a day for it eh...

Good to see fibre cuts being announced before the complaints even roll in! (on GZ anyway.)

The link is currently back up, the vendor hasn't given any indication so far that the repair is in place.

Bloody suspicious, though. I reckon it has been spliced into the NSA/GCSB network.

You heard it here first and I am not in Russia or an embassy.

Sending KDC an invoice as we speak.

Time to break out the tin foil hats, folks.

Nothing like a bit of spade-fade to slow down your browsing on a damp Thursday.

Internet was working for a little while but problem has come back and web traffic not working. Looks like your right that the problem hasn't been fixed.

Just out of curiosity, are you in Wellington or Christchurch on UFB?

I'm in Nelson and on broadband, it was affecting broadband customers too, went back up just after 6 apart from a couple of short periods where I lost access again.

a few hours (5pm ish) ago I got a call from my grandfather, complaining that his emails (pop to us) and some webpages were not loading, although genius VoIP to wxc VoIP was working fine. He is on Orcon UFB. Not sure if it has fixed itself yet...

Strange, I'm in Nelson too and had no problems today all day. I did have problems on Tuesday and Wednesday, but that was due to scheduled network maintenance in the area.

Interesting that during the problem time, about the only site I tried, that loaded problem free, was gmail. This was tried several times over a time period and it always loaded just as usual.

Wondering how that could be? (No, I don't think it was because it was re-directed via the direct NSA line!!).

Yes, I know, but the normal gmail access was during the bad period, prior to 6pm. Nothing else was working at that time.

Just curious. Guess there is no answer.

Sorry, my comment was a general update, not intended to answer your question.

To that question, no I don't have an answer. As a result of that outage we have improved our alternate routing so hopefully more than just Gmail will be working for you if we have a next time....
