Hey guys,

I'm about to move houses and, thanks to ChCh rental woes, will be moving into a portable sleep-out positioned next to a house. I need some help framing my request to Snap/Chorus to get the best result for my move.

I'm currently with Snap ADSL and planning on upgrading to VDSL on the new property, which is available, and ultimately to Fibre which is apparently coming early 2015. I'm planning on using the connection solely for naked Broadband and running it directly to the sleep-out. There'll be no other connections inside the house.

I want the best VDSL connection possible from the property, is it simply a case of the tech connecting a cable from the outside box to the sleep-out? (actually the garage next to the sleep-out). The house has an alarm, so I'll need to either install a second phone line or use a master filter I assume. Second phone line won't require a filter or anything, right?

In terms of cost, I'm assuming that using a second phone line will be cheaper than dealing with the existing line and a splitter? Or if similar or more expensive, would there be significant advantages in using a second line anyway?

I'm really after right stuff to ask for to get this installation done as painlessly and effectively as possible! If I can succinctly request something from Snap, using the right language, I'd feel much more confident about getting what I need.

Finally, what sort of costs am I likely to incur here? This move was sprung a bit suddenly and I have significant expenses involved with hiring the sleep-out and moving... Are you required to pay in advance for Chorus' stuff? Or is it added to your Snap bill to pay at the end of the month? I've been with Snap for 3+ years if it makes a difference.

Thanks for reading, I hope it makes sense!

If your wanting to go naked, and there is an alarm at play..

Ild look to change your alarm to IP or GSM..

Sounds like your looking for a slightly unconventional setup...

Trying to avoid unconventional at all costs! The alarm is just an inconvenience that the landlord's advertising on the listing, it won't be monitored (or used) by us. Hoping the second phone line will just avoid anything to do with it.

Hey Guys,

Don't forget that with Snap, VDSL wiring is not charged for at the moment, so you can get a master splitter installed at no charge - and it will make your VDSL perform much better in most cases. The part that will/could be an issue is external cabling to the sleep out, the chorus tech won't do that part sorry, VDSL wiring only includes install through to an existing jackpoint. So you'd need to organise that yourself with an electrician or cabling company (e.g. cablecraft or teltrac) prior to placing your order with us. Then, you just need to be present on the day of the install to show the tech where the jackpoint is that you've had installed and he will install the splitter at the demarc and connect your newly installed cable to the internet/data side of the splitter.

Thanks Ralph.

The sleep-out actually has a jackpoint (phone/internet)... is that a viable option to wire the VDSL to? I mean, could I plug a cat6 cable into the sleep-out's input connection and string it next to the demarc and ask the Chorus guy to wire it to the splitter? Easiest job he'd have all week.

Guessing there's rules relating to a permanent connection on the property or something though?

Ah, if there is already a jackpoint that has a cable back to the demarc then that is great! Should be no trouble for him to wire up on the internet side of the splitter. It can be on the same pair as the phone (and monitored alarm) or on the other pair, it really won't make any difference, except if they wanted to get internet in the future in the main house.
