Snap Sets New Standard for Fast Home Broadband

20 October 2014 - Snap’s national high speed 200Mbps UFB plans, announced today, give Kiwis access to the country’s fastest broadband throughout New Zealand.
Available now, the new Lightwave plans offer a high-speed 200/200 service over the Chorus network and a 200/20 option over Enable and Ultrafast Fibre. To date the 200/200 service has only been offered in Auckland.

To celebrate, Snap is offering its Unlimited plans for only $10/m more than the base plan price, on a new two year term. This offer is available to existing as well as new customers*.

Because high speed plans require better hardware than the standard routers most ISPs ship to their customers, a free high speed AC wireless device capable of supporting 200Mbps (and faster) will be included for new customers joining any two year 200Mbps plan*. The AVM 7490 modem is capable of delivering 200Mbps over a wireless connection as well as up to Gigabit speeds over a wired connection.

All of Snap’s broadband and fibre plans are delivered without rate shaping, traffic management and fair usage restrictions, giving customers the best possible internet experience.

“There is no faster commercially available service across the whole country today,” said James Koers, general manager, Snap Retail. “We’ve built our own network to ensure customers receive the fastest, most reliable service possible. We don’t cache or proxy or shape traffic in any way, giving customers peace of mind that they’re getting the service they expected and paid for.”

“Today, two out of every three of our sign-ups are for a fibre service which shows New Zealanders’ appetite is increasing for UFB as it becomes available. 200Mbps is just the beginning though as we’re now trialling Chorus’ new 1Gbps residential service,” adds James.

Hang on... I'm on the 100/50 plan so where does that leave me? Upload is dropped to 20mb/s on all plans except the 200/200 one?

Probably leaves you in exactly the same place you are now. Chorus have released cheaper 100Mbps and 200Mbps plans with 20Mbps up so many ISPs have adopted these which allows them to sell 100Mbps plans at a cheaper price. One would assume like many other situations like this in life that you'll just stay on your current plan unless you request a change.

I had the same concern...While I'm sure existing 100/50 users will be grandfathered, I'm torn as I'd love the 200 down, but don't want to pay an extra $30 for 200 up, and 20 up seems too slow.

200/50 would be a nice compromise, and I'd be happy to pay an extra $10 or $15 for the extra download speed.

Chris.

Hi guys

These are all based of the new Chorus & LFC profiles available. We spend quite a long time looking at the market and getting feedback and have offered the profiles we think cover the widest range of requirements.

In terms of any & all existing customers on (now old) plans - we are NOT proactively migrating anyone so this is entirely an opt-in exercise. So if you want to remain on your existing 100/50 service then thats fine with us (just as sbiddle has suggested above), but if you want to take advantage of the promotional offer we have at the moment (U/L for just $10 over the base plan) then you will need to one of the new plans.

Maslink - of the new profiles offered it goes 200/20, 200/100 and 200/200 - there is no 200/50 available.

Cheers
Ralph

Is the 7490 modem free for 200/200 plan only or if you go on the 100/20 or 200/20 plan can they get the 7490 free on 2 year contract as well?

Do whatever you want to do man.

Hi billgates

For new customers on nearly all plans (ADSL/VDSL/30Mbps & 100Mbps UFB) the 7490 is a $50 uplift on a 2 year term. Take a 200/20 or 200/200 service on a 2 year term and the 7490 is free (in fact is the only device offered). Just trying to help incentivise people to move to faster plans ;)

Cheers
Ralph

I just signed up to the 200/200/UL plan. I was told that I couldn't get a Fritzbox 7490 due to having been part way through a 2 year contract on the old 100/50 plan. And having received a fritzbox with that plan. In saying that the only reason I want the new fritzbox is just to get faster Wifi. As current Wifi AP is an old netgear router that is being used as just an AP. Guess it depends on how good the Wifi from the Fritzbox 7490 is.

Hi Ralph: Is Snap still using PPPoE? Can earlier FritzBox models handle the PPPoE overhead on 200/200 plan? If not, are there any plans to ditch PPP in the future?

As a general comment: 50mbit was an excellent speed. Pity it's not being offered anymore. This seems to be a general trend with LFCs, with UFF offering that batsh*t 1000/20 plan.

You should also make it clear on your site (maybe via the address checker) that currently Enable are not offering a 200Mbps upload option, so no Christchurch customers can actually get your 200/200 plan. This means in Christchurch for new sign ups you actually aren't offering any plans with an upload greater than 20mbps.

I'm currently on the 100/50 unlimited plan, which is $30 more than the new 100/20 plan. I don't want to drop my upload speed, but feel like $30 is a lot for the extra 30Mbps upload capacity. I'm also concerned that as prices continue to drop on new plans that staying on a grandfathered plan will become comparatively more and more expensive.

Edit:  Perhaps for Christchurch customers you should offer a deal to get 200 down and whatever the maximum Enable upload is for a slightly lower price than the 200/200 plan. I (and I'm sure other existing Chch customers) would love to sign up for a further 24 months to take advantage of the $10 unlimited option, but don't want to have to drop our upload to 20mbps, which as stated above would be our only option.

Aredwood - It is possible to upgrade to a new 7490 device (even if in contract) but we would ask for $199 plus the return of your other device, which must be in re-useable condition. Having said that, the key difference is the wi-fi performance which many people have sorted by using other APs or cabled connections.

HawK89 - no plans at this stage to offer 200/100, sorry. Note that the wholesale price of that service is not much different than the 200/200 so likely that market pricing wouldn't be much lower.

ripdog - yes/yes/stay tuned ;) Options still exist to customise U/L and D/L speeds but its at the regulated pricing, the new options coming through now are priced on a "commercial" basis and are generally lower. So it makes sense to use the new services. And yes the 1000/20 service doesn't make much sense to us at all!!

Cheers
Ralph

Out of interest Ralph, and feel free not to answer, but what is the price difference to the RSP between the current 100/50 plan and the 200/20 plan (or 100/20 which seems to have replaced the 100/50 at most providers)?

One of the great things about the 30/10 and 100/50 plans when they launched was that they were better (upload wise) than the launch plans for NBN in Aus. Now it seems that we're joining ranks with them on upload (for the base plans that most people will be on).
