Hi there,

quick question regarding the 2degrees 3g usb modems  .

If I buy one here, can I also use the modem in Germany/Europe if I put a German sim card in when I go travelling there? Will it automatically pick up the networks or will I have to fiddle? Or is the modem locked to 2degrees?

Ideally I don't want to have to buy a 3g dongle in NZ AND in Germany.

Thanks a lot

Pretty sure it should be unlocked. Just make sure the German provider uses the same network frequency bands. You may have to use generic software too if the provided software is 2degrees specific. Often you can find generic manufacturer-made drivers and software for 3G modems.

I have taken 3G modems between carriers several times, and in addition to ensuring that it isn't SIM locked (don't think 2dm do this yet), and is on the right frequency bands (2DM uses the same bands as most of Europe, but not the America's), you will most likely have to set up the APN details for the new company. Not hard, but if you haven't done it before, it can be a tiny bit fiddly.

3G sticks are so cheap now days, you have to balance saving $40 with the head ache you might have if you're not sure what you're doing.

We use the same bands as Europe does, and our modems are not locked. Have fun in Germany!
