Hello,
I'm on ADSL now and was keen to move up to VDSL since its avail at my address for about the same price, however I done a bit of a google around and found numerous forum posts that suggest if you choose a naked plan Slingshot will not arrange/provide any chorus install - they just rely on your existing wiring to be "good enough".  This is contrary to what their website states "A technician will need to install a new VDSL master-splitter and new master jack point inside your home. Standard installation and wiring should be done by a technician and should be completed the same day. You'll need to be at home during the installation so the technician can make sure you are happy with what is being proposed."

I'm worried that I likely wont get the best experience possible if they actually don't do this. I'm hoping someone from slingshot can confirm.

Also for the geeks that know more about this stuff: since there is no "voice" interference on a naked plan I can kind of see there may not be a need for a splitter but what about the standard telephone cabling and jack points etc, is this suitable for VDSL?  Is it actually common practice for the other providers to not do an 'install' for a naked VDSL plan?

Hey Adam,

Your last paragraph pretty much sums up why a splitter install isn't done on all naked VDSL connections. I'm of the opinion that it's still a safer bet to have the splitter installed, naked or not, as there's no way of telling from our end the quality of your internal wiring which could have a big impact if it's not up to scratch. Flick me a PM with your current account number and I'd be happy to arrange it all for you, splitter and all.

Cheers,
Chris

A splitter does far more than separate voice interference and is highly recommended for VDSL services.

If the line is good enough, I don't think ISP's are obligated to install one.  It's not free, and your provider won't be the one paying for the install.  I whole heatedly recommend one be installed, but not many are willing to pay for it.  It costs upwards of $200.00.  It will display on your bill as an installation fee or similar.

I thought Bigpipe were the only one not doing Splitter installs by default on every connection.
Obviously that is not the case.

I eagerly await a new sbiddle blog post ranting at Slingshot for ruining broadband in NZ.

No cost to the end user here. We absorb any splitter costs for VDSL.

I stand corrected then!  Wasn't the way it was for ADSL :) Thanks for helping make the network better!

i find this interesting.. i always thought slingshot did spliter installs for al their VDSL plans.

i must now note to rant on a little more about the importance of splitters where there is not a single jackpoint in Slingshot naked vdsl threads.

hm. do you mean slingshot use the vdsl line that chorus sell without he $5 a month to cover the splitter and simply absorb for every customer with a POTS line?

Sorry Chris @ Slingshot, I hope I didn't stir up a hornets nest here.  Thanks for answering my question honestly and the offer to ensure my connection is done right.
I will get in touch via PM.

This. Part of the job of the master filter/splitter is to act as a low pass filter, preventing the higher xDSL frequencies introducing noise on to the POTS (voice) line.

The (arguably) more important job that many overlook is isolating the premises wiring from the xDSL circuit. Even recent wiring frequently contains line taps / stubs, unused jack points etc. which are no issue for a voice circuit, but have a serious negative impact on the higher xDSL frequencies - the result is substandard xDSL, either slow, or in very bad cases frequent disconnects. The high frequencies get reflected (much like light from a mirror) back from the unused wiring, and interfere with the primary signal. Installing a master splitter creates a clean transmission line for the xDSL signal.

Had a chat with @waynea earlier, looks like we'll be doing splitter installs with all VDSL connections from DEC fyi.
