I am not sure if this is posted in the right place but here I go,

My street has just started a Chorus UFB install so I thought it would be a good time since it will not be complete for about two months to get costs and hardware that will be needed when I decided to have UFB run up to my premise.

I am currently with Spark on VDSL and sync at around 30 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up and my family have been with them for about the last twenty years, but after issue after issue I have decided it is time to move on. I have chosen Snap after talking with friends and doing research online.

As far as my setup goes, I have three HP Proliant servers that do various different bandwidth intensive tasks along with about ten other computers throughout the house and two Smart TV's plus a few iPhones and iPads. I am using the ISP purchased Huawei HG659B and I have a 24 port Gigabit switch connected to it for all of my hardwired devices and it is somewhat reliable with a few issues.

However I intend on getting new equipment when Fibre is completed and I get it installed so I can take advantaged of it.

I am interested in the Snap Lightwave Home 200 Ultra, to my knowledge and research the phone service is in a form of VOIP through the modem over Fibre. The modem included in their package is the Fritz 7490 and as you can probably understand I am looking for something a bit better to suit the kind of usage I will be doing. I was originally intending on purchasing the Linksys WRT1900ac as it is a rock solid router with unmatched performance (the Asus RT-AC66U may also be comparable). However these products don't feature any kind of VOIP phone service with phone ports like the Fritz box does. I have been a bit stuck but then I thought that something along the lines of a Linksys SPA2102 could potentially work. Its a simple VOIP modem that could connect to one of the Ethernet ports on the WRT1900AC.

So my question is would that kind of setup work? Chorus ONT to WRT1900AC with VLAN10 tagging setup to the SPA2102 for Voice. I understand Snap would likely not support it but I will obviously hold onto the Fritz Box for troubleshooting and not to mention the fact I would be in a 24 month contract.

My other question is that we currently have an Xtra email address with them and if we leave will we be able to keep those addresses? We will still have two mobile phones "On Account" with Spark but we won't have a Landline or Internet service with them.

Sorry if this post is long but hopefully I can seek the answer I require.

Snap won't give ouy the VOIP password so technically only the Fritz will work (there are ways around this). What features does the 7490 not have that you need?

I have heard that people have got it working with products such as the Cisco SPA112 ATA but I'm not sure myself of the settings etc and its not necessarily the features that the 7490 doesn't have, its the fact that it is not designed to have over 10 devices connected 24/7 and actual server hardware running off of it constantly doing intensive tasks between laptops and the servers, say file sharing for example. Its mainly a reliability thing and the fact that the 1900ac probably has the best range in the industry (stock) and third party firmware in the form of DD-WRT in the future.

There must be a way to get another VOIP modem/ ATA device to work such a the SPA112.

Thats what I had just thought of, potentially connecting the WRT1900AC directly to the Chorus ONT and then connect the Fritz box to one of the Ethernet ports on the WRT1900AC.

The issue with that is that I'm basically have a $400 ATA VOIP modem, but if I have to go that route then I will since I will have to purchase one off them in the contact anyway.

Hopefully a Snap representative picks up this thread and can give some insight on this.

While you may rave about the AC1900 the reality is I've yet to hear a good thing about it. There have also been a number of posts on here recently from people trashing it as well.

The simple reality is we're not in a world where a single WiFi AP should never be the focus in a big home.

What specifically do you need that the 7490 doesn't offer? I run a pretty complex setup at home with over 20 devices and bandwidth intensive tasks/smart tv's/VPN/multiple VOIP lines and I have no problems.

There are ways to get the VOIP password out from the Fritzbox's but it won't be supported if its setup on another device. You will also have to managed your VOIP configuration.

RE: Email addresses
I don't see why they wouldn't allow you to keep your email addresses. My parents still have their Clear email address from ~ 12 years ago even though they are with WXC now. Just configure your mail clients to use secure SMTP with your auth details.

I must admit it's more of a want than a need, that said, I have read numerous reports that the Fritz!Box series don't have acceptable wireless range and a few of my friends have also demonstrated this to me whereas the 1900AC has incredible range for its stock configuration. I also need robust port fowarding options which my colleagues have said are not the best. They might be wrong however.

The reality is that I straight up don't want to use the ISP provided router and we should not be forced to and as ignorant as that may sound there has to be a way. I know that Snap provides the best "ISP" router but my point still stands.

Would connecting the Fritz!Box to the WRT1900AC work? If I were to disable everyone thing such as Wifi and whatever else the Fritz!Box can do and just use it for VOIP? That would be a much simpler way to do it but you mentioned getting the password off the Fritz!Box... If I were to purchase something such as a Cisco SPA112. I realise all of this is unsupported and Snap won't help me but if I start experiencing big troubles with it then I will simply only use the Fritz!Box in its standard configuration.

If you need reliable phone services and don't want to use the FritzBox, then maybe Snap isn't the ISP for you.

It's not a point of having a reliable phone service, but its just a thing of getting it working behind a router of my choice. Snap is the only ISP in the country that does 200/200 Fibre over Chorus for less than $200 a month and has decent reviews and better international bandwidth than the competition in the residential space.

Wireless on the FB isn't that great but I don't use it since I need multiple AP's for a large house. I turned off the wireless and use Apple AirPorts throughout the house.
I haven't had a problem with port forwarding but depends on requirements. I have a number of servers/IPSEC vpn setup with no problems.

Agree that you shouldn't be forced to use the provided router. I actually have a number of high end Cisco/Juniper routers along with lower end Linksys and consumer brand routers but prefer the FB. Its just simple and works for what I need it to do.

Under account information > internet connection > set the ISP to existing connection over LAN on the FB.

There's no WAN port (labelled) on the back of the FB. Its just LAN1.
Connect that to one of the ports on the Linksys router and should be good to go.

Depending on the firmware you using on that Linksys, you might have to disable SIP ALG on the Linksys router for VOIP to work properly from the FB.

So if I follow that it should in theory work, I will likely use the latest stock firmware a first then in the future I will consider either using one of the third party options available or write my own as I did for my old WRT54G back in the day.
