I'm currently an Orcon customer who is using the unsupported configuration of a Mikrotik router, and the Orcon CPE behind that (via NAT, and DCHP on VLAN 10) for VoIP. I'm very interested in the new Snap plans, and my contract is about to roll over, and unlimited 200/20 for the price of unlimited 100/20 from Orcon sounds pretty good.

Does anyone use Snap UFB with the Fritz, or another ATA, behind a Mikrotik? If so, how did you get it to work?

Using another router is a dealbreaker for me, unfortunately. I tried to cope with the Orcon Genius as my router for a while but eventually found it was just too restrictive.

Snap people are welcome to PM me rumors with future plans for using the ONT's ATA. I'm in a UFF area.

If you know how to setup a network and such, and know how to configure the mikrotik for vlan then you'll be fine.

The Fritz Box will play nicely in most situations. The only time the Fritz Box hasn't played nicely was with a firmware issue and VDSL

I've got Snap VDSL on an RB1100. Zyxel modem in bridge mode, with the Mikrotik running PPPoE on VLAN10 to the modem.

I assume UFB is the same. My Father-in-law is getting it and I'll be overseas when it (hopefully) gets installed, so I've pre-configured it.

I can set up the network no problem. The question is, how do I get the phone service to work? I assume it's delivered by a phone port on the Fritz, in which case either I need to persuade the Fritz to sit behind the Mikrotik, or I need to configure another ATA to replace the Fritz.

On Orcon this is easy because they use DHCP on VLAN 10. So I get the Mikrotik to run a DHCP server on VLAN 10 on the port I plug the Genius into. The the Genius gets to the internet via the Mikrotik, and the VoIP side of it works happily. How do I do the equivalent of this on Snap?

Snap use PPPoE so you simply need to configure that on VLAN10.

Due to the limitations of the VoIP ports on the ONT I'd er surprised if Snap have any interest in using them since they've committed themselves to the Fritz!box

sbiddle : Compass, MyRepublic and I believe TrustPower deliver phone service over the ONT's FXS ports. So it's not unheard of.

sbiddle : Compass, MyRepublic and I believe TrustPower deliver phone service over the ONT's FXS ports. So it's not unheard of.

There are plenty of providers using the ONT ports and it's a solution that works fine.

I could spend the next hour writing a 2000 word summary of the technical pros and cons of it as a solution but I won't. I'll summarise it by saying every large ISP is going to decide on a solution whether it be RGW based or ONT based. Mixing and matching would represent a nightmare on many levels so I would see very little chance of anybody doing that.

Snap protect their VoIP service as it's a fully managed end to end product so won't give you any SIP credentials. If you don't like that aspect and aren't willing to use their hardware there are plenty of other providers out there. Just because a SIP device will register and make a call work with 3 settings don't mean that it's going to be fully compatible with a network or operate correctly, which is the issue large numbers of people who attempt to configure their own hardware find.

I don't know*. I use 2talk. But Snap did tell me their voip only works on their fritzboxes

* I could guess, but it isn't something I would be comfortable using, so why bother?

I know that the fritzbox has an IP client mode (Works with another router instead of being a router itself). I have got mine setup like this. But im using it only as a Wifi access point. Im not using the Snap VOIP service so cant say if it would still work in this config.
