The answer to this will be "ring Snap" and "differs depending on location" but I want to ask here anyway

I live with my parents still (laugh all you want) and I just can't convince my mother that UFB is good - she does not understand the technology and so blocks any discussion with it. Dad is fine with UFB, but cowers to Mum ...

They are away for a week (only just found out they are away) and so thought to myself - maybe I could get UFB installed while they are away. I figure that is not long enough to get all the boxes ticked however and to get UFB actually installed.

I figure that I would also need to be at home since the ONT needs to be installed inside, which is another issue

2 weeks is pretty standard for an install, assuming yours is totally straightforward. You'd be very lucky to get it all done within a week

also, sounds like you probably don't have permission to get it done so they may not allow it at all :)

Just tell your mum your increasing the value of the property by installing UFB, and do it behind her back.

good rule of thumb. - Always ask for forgiveness, never for permission.

Simple answer is that its an unknown.

Even if you did order for a UFB installation, the Snap end is quick and provisioning requests are put through to Chorus quick. Its however long it takes to go through their processes.
Depends on a whole bundle of things as well like need the owners consent (in your case I would assume it would be your Dad since he owns the house?) also if the property is ROW or easy access. Chorus has to access a bundle of things before it handed from provisioning through to the team that does the install. Even once that is done, the actual install can depend on resourcing/bookings and dates.

So you might not be able to even get the installation organised for the date that your parents are away :)

Get your mother to put the phone account under your name and you pay the bill. Im sure she wont have an issue with that and you can do what you want :-p

Has been under my name since I moved to Snap, and I pay the bill (+ rent)
I had Dad's permission, but trying to discus the issue with Mum is a no go zone (along with a few other topics).

Thanks for the input, next time I'll try and get more notice for when they are away to organise install

Is she concerned they'll dig up the property too much ? You'd be best to ask her straight out "whats the problem" - but yeah, parents can be so much fun when it comes to technology ;)

I really really wish I knew the answer...
I believe however I would need somewhere else to live if I asked "whats the problem"

What you would also need to find out is if you can get UFB without needing to remove the existing phone line. So your mum can still have a POTS line if she wants. When you eventually move out. As for install time. It took me exactly 1 week to get UFB installed. Right from phoning Snap to say "I want UFB". To when it was all working. But my house was an easy install since I own it, no cross lease, and existing Chorus ducting already in my driveway.

If you are going to go ahead with it think very hard about where you will tell the installer to put the ONT. As it would be expensive to have it moved.

And worst case and you get kicked out, I have some spare rooms available, already cabled with Cat6 and RG6. Router, network switch, ONT ect on a UPS. As well as central heating. Assuming you live in Auckland.
