Can we get some more details about the upcoming $95 Gigabit plan for Dunedin UFB customers?

So far all I've heard is that the download speed will be 1000Mbps and upload speed "likely" 500Mbps.

Can we get any confirmation on the upload speed and perhaps CIR values that will apply?
Will the existing Genius modem be good enough for 1Gbit connection?
Will the transfer to new Gigabit plan be done automatically for old customers?

Any extra info would be much appreciated.

My understanding is the CIR is the default 2.5/2.5 that's on all new Evolve plans. You do need to remember however that the CIR only applies to appropriately tagged traffic - like every existing consumer UFB plans out there the headline speed is only a best effort EIR with absolutely no guaranteed performance level.

Currently I get very consistent downstream of 91Mbps (11.4MB/s) on the 100/50 plan any part of the day (peak or off-peak). Counting network overhead that is a proper 100Mbps line. Also it really is super reliable, even compared to top European ISPs.
I guess if the reliability and consistency remains the same as it is currently, I will be happy no matter what the CIR is.

Upstream is a different story with Orcon though, I was never able to get more than 30Mbps (while paying for 50Mbps), but with an upgrade to 500 (or something remotely close to that), all will be forgiven. :)

I am currently with Orcon Fibre and am very interested in the new pricing (and speed). The Orcon web site seems to be geared towards new customers at present so hoping to hear what existing ones have to do and if we can also get the Roku 3 on the 24 month contact.

Hi all,

We're stoked to see early interest in our gigabit services, I'll answer as many of these Qs as I can! :)

Most of the info we've made public is outlined here: https://www.orcon.net.nz/gigatown/

On speeds, I can confirm it'll be 1000Mbps down and 500Mbps up - CIR values are set by Chorus, I'm not 100% sure on these at the moment.

Re: modem, we'll be supplying a new Gigabit device to make sure you get the most out of the connection.

Existing customers are eligible to get the deal (including that sweet, sweet Roku device) but will need to request the upgrade when it becomes available or pre-register at the link above, it won't be automatic. A new 12/24 month contract will need to be agreed to to get the deal.

Give me a shout if you have any more Qs :)

Cheers,

Cam
