I'm considering joining but if I am not planning to use their VoIP can I use my existing router rather than buying the Fritz!box ?

What are the modem/router requirements to use UFB with them if not using the Fritz!box ?

If I don't buy that it makes it more compelling to use them go no term or 12 months

You don't need it, but if you aren't a techie and can't manually setup a fibre connection on your device then I'd recommend getting a Fritz since they usually come setup.

Also your device may not be up to spec do you'll have extra hoops to jump through if you aren't getting near advertised speeds.

as long as you can set VLAN and can enter account information into the router then your router should be fine.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

It needs to support VLAN tagging and PPP connections. Also check how fast it can go. I initially tried an older fritzbox on my connection (7260 I think) It maxed out at approx 25mbit. As PPP connections require routers with more powerful processors than non PPP connections.

Myself - I use an Ubiquity Edge Router lite on my Snap Connection.

Should I assume that even if I get a non Fritz!box working i.e. one that supports vlan tagging that the Fritz!box is still needed to use their VoIP service ?

You don't need the fritz to use VOIP but you do need to to get your voip password because snap will not give it to you. See this topic>>

I personally do use the Fritz Box for VOIP at this stage but I use an old PC (Core2Duo+3xgb ethernet cards) running SOPHOS UTM to make the connection to the internet. I intend to roll my own asterisk box at some stage...

Hi

In the past I was able to use a softphone on my PC to connect to the SNAP VOIP server (connect1.plus.snap.net.nz) and make/receive calls.

Snap have started automatically changing the VOIP passwords regularly, and the Fritz boxes pick up the new config directly from SNAP on a regular basis.
What this means is that any password you get out of the Fritz will work for a while, but then stop working once the password is changed.
It's an idiotic and draconian system in my opinion (MAC address lockdown anyone?) but they do this to try and limit fraud.

This means that using a third party VOIP system (softphone, ATA gateway etc) will no longer works with SNAP.

If anyone can prove me wrong, please do...

Snap can only change your password if they can get into the Fritz. I don't use the fritz to make the connection to the internet so it is not sitting on the edge of the network. Snap only can access my fritz when I open up some ports to allow them to do so.

Surprisingly if I connect my fritz to the edge of the network (ONT) and it downloads its configuration from SNAP, it actually has the wrong VOIP password in it. I need to change the voip password to allow it to work.

I have had the same voip password in my fritz for at least the last 12 months and have no evidence of SNAP ever changing this password.

Snap can and do log into your FritzBox.
I received a nasty surprise one day when I was on the phone to Snap support. The person said something along the lines of - Hold on while I log into your router and check the settings.

The conversation went something like this -
me - excuse me what are you doing?
Snap - we can log into your FritzBox and change the settings for you. We can not get into your local network just see and change any settings.
me - YOU CAN WHAT!!!!!

The Snap person said they would put a note on my account to say I did not want them logging onto my router. PLEASE DO was my response.

When I had a look around the router config I found a user - TR069-******** that they used. I have a screenshot of the router showing when they logged in. I have disabled the user and its ability to login from the Internet. Next firmware upgrade I will have to check if that user is re-enabled.

I purchased the router - not rented but purchased. That makes it mine and I control who can connect to it. No one does without my knowledge and approval. Control over the device is what owning it gives me.

And to complete the picture - Edge Router Lite already purchased from Nicegear. As soon as I find a solution to the ipsec issue it will be my main router.

A couple of Mac laptops having trouble connecting to a Mac server with ipsec. Both ends natted. Some of the reply packets from the server are not being recognised as related to the outgoing connection in the edge router so are being dropped by the firewall.

When I get a bit more time I will dig deeper and see if I can see what is going wrong but that is a story for another thread :-)

Back to the OP's original question (sorry for hijacking earlier)

Over the long weekend I took a look at a couple of alternative routers.

A Netgear D6200 or D6300 will work nicely. Easy to configure via the web-UI. Just do a firmware update as soon as you get it online. Good wifi.

A Vigor 2130 or 2860 will also work nicely, and the 2860 looks like it'll handle 100mbps throughput.
I've set up a 2760 for a PPPoA DSL connection before and while in the end all was, well, it was not as straightforward as one would think. Again, web-UI based, but their idea of a good web-UI layout was rather foreign (to me). The same could be said for a Fritzbox though, so don't let that put you off one. They're nice routers.

I'm a Cisco man myself, but as you'll see from a post on here recently, an 800 series router won't handle 100mbps UFB and you're paying a lot for the name.

HTH.
