Hey guys, just wanted some help regard our flat dilemma with getting fibre installed

So my mates and I have moved into a a new flat in Dunedin which has fibre available (Great!), we've made a request with Orcon to hook us up on the 5th (today).

So the chorus technician came along and said that they couldn't get the fibre installed because the pole directly outside of our flat had a 'red flag' saying basically do not climb , as it looks a little bit fragile.

So the fibre line is apparently on the opposite pole of our house, so that fibre line needs to connect to our pole and then into our flat, but yeah theyre not allowed to perform work on that pole due to the red flag. The technician was very nice and honest with us saying that they'll request for the pole to get 'replaced' but realistically who knows when it will happen as there are power lines on it as well.

We're really keen on getting fibre and we've been orcon customers since forever, anyone have any ideas on how we can approach this issue?

Your approach is to wait until Chorus and the local lines company (assuming it's their pole) come to an agreement and work out a solution. Nothing else will make the process any faster.

Did you suggest to them that they come back with a cherrypicker?

What would happen if the existing phone line got damaged? (theoretically)

They may lose the existing service they previously had until the pole is replaced,

A phone/data connection is not a guaranteed right...

You would likely be without service until the pole was replaced.

@sbiddle: yeah the worst fear is the time. We don't mind if it takes a month or two to get the work done but not for the entire year :/

@traderstu: hmm whats the chances that they would actually do that for us? has anyone got them to do it before? i might give chorus a call tomorrow to explore all possible options to get work done on the pole/workarounds to somehow get the fibre in the flat

@jonb : that's probably one of our points to argue with the Dunedin city council, to get it replaced/fixed asap... assuming they own the pole line :/

Council would have nothing to do with the pole, it'll be owned by the local lines company if it has power cables on it.

If it's been flagged then it'll be part of a routine replacement.

If the pole is unsafe to climb, its potentially unsafe, period. Thats a concern, unles the OSH requirement is what is the difficulty

Poles can stay standing (in a 'unsafe' to climb condition) for months (if not years) it is generaly only when there is a shift in loading on the pole that they fall over - this happens when someone climbs them, a line is broken or extra weight loading is put on/ or off a line (tree fall, high wind, earthquake etc)

But as far as how long it takes to sort them out - if it is a Chorus pole (ex Telecom, generlay on the opersite side of the road to the power reticulation poles, Etc) then normaly if a replacement can be put in (without the need to remove or shift the power @ the same time) within days and possibley weeks of notification to the local service company (in Dunedin that would be Downer NZ) - depending on workload and staffing requirments.  If it requires powerline company co-ordiation it realy shouldn't take any longer (but often does to the scheduling both teams)

What would happen if a car accidently bumped into it?

Might be worth a call to the local lines company to see what the timetable is to get it replaced.

If a car 'bumped' into it - it would still be replaced within days if not hours ( but an insurance company or car owner would be paying the call out fees and cost of replacing it urgently in that case)
