Here's a gnarly question for the 2degrees geeks. How does one purchase an Aussie datapack for an iPad? Of course, it's a trivial task on an iPhone -- just send a text to 288. But texting on an iPad requires using the 2degrees text app on the SIM, and it doesn't appear to accept the text "buy AUS500MB" sent to 288. The pre-paid amount on my iPad wasn't reduced after sending a few of these texts, anyway. (Although I can text my iPhone from my iPad).

A quick call to 2degrees revealed the following:

1. The help desk person wasn't familiar with what an Aussie datapack is.

2. She wasn't able to purchase the Aussie pack for me because she wasn't able to do this on her computer.

3, After I spluttered with indignation, she WAS able to purchase a datapack for me (after consulting someone else).

4. If I want to buy another Aussie datapack in Asutralia, I will need to do this online. Of course, you can't do this online!

5. OK, so I'll need to call 2degrees in NZ from Australia, pay the international rate, and spend another 10-15 minutes explalining what an Aussie datapack is, and why I want to purchase one.

I know there is a sticky with this information on this forum. Maybe the sticky needs updating.

Cheers (or maybe not),

Dr. C.

It's very poor that they don't allow this pack to be ordered via the online portal. Ordering these things via SMS is archaic.

Hi all

We appreciate the process might not be ideal atm but changes ARE on the way. We'll be looking at amending the website with more info on the current process soon.

In the meantime, OP please can you pm your iPad SIM number so we can check who handled it.  Sounds like you didn't get our expected customer experience there, sorry.

So, for now we advise customers with non-SMS ability devices (iPads, USB's etc) to call Care on 0800 022022 or 200 from a 2degrees phone to add the pack manually BEFORE they leave NZ.

Otherwise pop the SIM into a phone or device that can send SMS and text 'buy AUS300' or 'buy AUS500' to 288.

Regards
^POB

Can't do that. Different sized SIM cards.

joker97: Or use an Aussie SIM

In hindsight, an excellent idea. I've done this before on trips to Australia but it often took more than a few minutes of fiddling around with the correct APN, and a trip to the Telstra store at the local mall, to get it set up. I mistakenly thought the 2degrees Aussie datapack would take 30 seconds to set up and save me time.

If anyone does purchase the Aussie datapack and travels to Australia, my experience with both an iPhone and an iPad is that the vodafone AU network is very laggy and slow. It was the default network selected by both my devices. I manually selected Telstra and the internet experience felt much more snappy. I haven't tested Optus yet.
