Orcon CS told me the modem I can use has to be the Genius modem as the connection is locked to the Mac address. Is this true?

Or can I use a third party modem with the logon and password extracts from the Genius config file?

I realise the Orcon VoIP line would not work.

Not quite sure where the "connection is locked to the MAC address" myth has surfaced from but I hear it a lot.  I expect it is because we preconfigure shipped modems by MAC address in our automated configuration systems so that when you plug them in they "just work".

On some connection types you will need the authentication details to BYO modem, but in most cases (LLU or UFB) you don't need them as the auth is port-based.

Also worth noting we won't provide any technical support if you're using a BYO modem.  So keep your Genius handy in case you run into problems.

HTH.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have a Genius modem today that stopped authenticating all of a sudden. I have been left without a connection waiting on second level support so wanted to see if I could use my own modem while I wait.

Orcon reset my DSL password back to the correct value in their server over the weekend and I am back online.

Having got that sorted I tried a third party modem with my login and password and confirmed it works fine for the internet connection. Obviously the Genius VoIP does not work and Orcon will not support the modem but it is reasurring to know in an emergency you can use a backup modem to keep you going. The VoIP is not really an issue as I have Genius Go working on my mobile.

Anyone know if you can put a 2 degrees USB stick in the Genius to provide redundant connection or is it not that simple?

Does it work with any NZ USB mobile network?
