I've got a friend who has slingshot UFB and is having trouble (similar to what others have described on Geekzone) with their supplied TriplePlay 150 router.

I'm happy to set up something better for him, but need to know

(a) Is it possible to put the TriplePlay 150 behind another router so the voice service still works?  If not, has anyone had any luck persuading slingshot to convert their UFB voice service to the iTalk product?  We can always buy another PAP2T off trademe...

(b) What is used for the internet service over UFB?  PPPoE on VLAN10 or something else?  If PPPoE, is the login the same as the account username and password, or is it something else?

Said friend is 5 hours' drive away so I'm not going to set this up in a way that will fall over and be unfixable remotely.

a)
Can't say (haven't tried).
However, mine was provisioned (incorrectly) as iTalk, and that resulted in a fairly lengthy back-and-forth about fixing it.
I got the impression that the person I was talking to thought it was important to get it provisioned correctly (despite the time and effort) rather than leave the iTalk and add a credit.

b)
Y-yes.

If that's tricky, will they at least give out SIP credentials/etc so that the voice service can be set up on another router?

How locked down is the TriplePlay?  Could I reconfigure it so that its WAN was DHCP with no VLAN, and then plug it into another router?  Has anyone tried?

I've done this on Orcon -- my Mikrotik offers DHCP on VLAN10 and the Genius happily picks it up and works behind NAT.

It's easy enough to pull it from the config file, but they may block any other device. It has been mentioned here at least once, and my SPA112 stopped registering a couple of days after being connected (without me changing anything.)

I've had a quick (few minutes) look and didn't see anything about DHCP on the WAN. There's PPPoE, IPoE, and bridge as options for the "WAN Service", but I'm not sure if there's another setting elsewhere that affects the WAN port.

IPoE and Bridge sound promising.  The trouble will be playing with the settings when I'm not present and the internet is going through the thing...

I can't ask anyone local to let me play with theirs because *sigh* no Slingshot in UFF areas.

Any update on this?
I'm planning to buy a linksys EA6300
How easy would the voice set up be?
I'm sure the broadband shouldnt be a problem at all, but need some clarification on phone setup.

EA6300 doesn't have integrated VoIP - you're totally on your own for configuration and additional hardware that will be required.

My solution was to switch to an ISP who offered voice through the ONT (MyRepublic, although I understand Compass offer this too) which means I can use pretty much any router, and it won't affect the voice service.

Hi Deadlyllama,

When u did it on Orcon, have u set up any port forwarding on your Mikrotik? because i'm going to use Asus RT-ac68u as my main router and put the NF4V behind it for SIP phone only. if possible can you clear me the steps when you set up the Mikrotik on Orcon.

Cheers

Is this on UFB?  I don't know anything about how to make this work on DSL.

I had the old Genius Black, not the NF4V, so while I'd assume the same trick would work, I can't guarantee it.  And I'm no longer an Orcon customer, so this is from memory.

One of the features you need to make this work is the ability to set up VLANs on your router's LAN ports, and use a VLAN on the WAN port too.  I'm assuming that an Asus router isn't going to offer that.

If you can do that, you need to add VLAN #10 to the WAN port, and do DHCP on that.

On a LAN port, add VLAN #10, either on its own IP range with DHCP & NAT out to the internet, or just the same as the rest of your network.  Plug the Genius into that port.

If the above instructions seem a bit complicated or beyond you, DON'T DO THIS.  Orcon will no longer be able to help you when things break.

Why do you want to use the RT-ac68u?  You could use it as a plain AP (disable the DHCP server) and plug it into your Orcon NF4V router, and not play the VLAN game at all.

Thanks for your info Deadlyllama, i have got it work. the reason i wanted  to use ac68u is 5Gwifi and also stable and much better coverage.
