I've currently got the TP-Link Archer C9 (802.11ac 1900 router) on me and will be connected to Snap in about two weeks.
I am new to Fibre networks so I am kind of lost here.

According to this subforum you need a router that can do VLAN tagging and PPPoE, however it seems like my router can only do PPPoE authentication.
Would I still be able to use this router or do need to sell it and get another one? I don't care about the VOIP features Snap offers.

I also hear about an ONT device that is connected inside your house; am I able to connect my Archer C9 to the ONT device without needing a modem?

More info about the router here:
http://www.tp-link.us/products/details/?model=Archer+C9

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Sadly it doesn't seem to have OpenWrt/DD-WRT support (yet), this router just released November last year.

Here's a simulation of their Web UI

There is no such thing as a "modem" in the UFB world. Your router connects directly to the ONT.

I can't quite comprehend by manufacturers are still making devices with no VLAN tagging support... But I guess it's the same reason they build devices on what's effectively stock hardware and busybox because it's easy.

If your router can't do VLAN tagging you either need to buy something that does or buy something such as a Mikrotik or switch to do the VLAN tagging for you.

I'm also not sure whether Snap give out PPPoE credentials anyway, you'd need to check with them.

Thanks for the information.
Snap does seem to give out PPPoE info on their support page located at
www.snap.net.nz/support/content/1/17/en/general-settings.html

Anyways, I will likely be getting another router in that case. Would it be worth getting an additional wired router (like one from Mikrotik or Ubiquiti), a managed switch (like the TP-Link Easy Smart 5/8 port, or the D-Link Easy Smart 5/8 port), or just replacing my wireless router with one that has VLAN support?

Would it be feasible to connect a switch to the ONT to do the VLAN tagging (like the D-Link DGS-1100 5 port) on port 1, while port 2 is connected to the router?

I know this is very late but I had a similar issue and there is a solution in software. By downloading the latest British firmware you can set the VLAN ID for this router. Under Advanced > Network > IPTV and enable IPTV then set mode to custom and change VLAN ID (set IP-Phone and IPTV to whatever you want if not using).

it seems to support VLAN tagging on the WAN interface so it should work fine

TP-Link have a few routers that didn't initially appear to support VLAN tagging. Or more correctly, they did - it is accessible under the IPTV section of setup as far as I can see. The problem in NZ is that we seem to use a VLAN ID of 10 and TP-Link didn't let you set the value that low.
Certainly this was the case with the archer c7. But they seemed to release a version a while back that did support VLAN 10 - a few places were selling it and advertising that it was VLAN 10 ready. They quite recently released firmware to upgrade all c7's to handle this.

Check you can upgrade your firmware and you should be ok.

Download the firmware on another internet connection. Upload the firmware on the TP Link router and try again?
