I'm a 2degrees customer, still using a Samsung Galaxy S Duos they offered me a few years ago. It was my first real smartphone, but it's a bit old now and storage capacity is annoying and I have been looking at upgrading. I am not the type to upgrade to the latest every year, but I saw their 'Trade Up' offer on their website and thought about it for a few days. Then I read the info again, thought about it again. My understanding was that I call, sign up to a new plan (at least $49 plan) plus pay an extra $10. My maths told me it was a great deal (bear in mind that I do not know the ins and outs of telecommunication company finances etc).
Upon calling 2DG tonight, I am surprised to be told that there is a monthly fee for the new handset you choose. I ask the guy to repeat back to me, and I repeat back to him my understanding. I do the maths: $49 plan + $10 + $37 handset fee = a lot more than I budgeted. I was disappointed and had to decline the offer.

TL, DR: 2degrees, please put all necessary cost info on your website.

Considering some of the discussion in this thread here, it seems others aren't confused with the scheme. I also was under no illusion as to the way the offer worked. On the page on Trade-up, the first thing in Step 1 is "Pick one of the following handsets and get it interest free over 24 months". I would politely suggest maybe you missed all the details on the site when you first looked into it?

Yeah I see what you mean - but I was on the general 'Trade Up' page, not the one touting the Galaxy S5 which had the full price layout, which I can see now.
The salesman also said I'd have to pay an early termination fee (I have 7 months left so about $300) - despite 2DG getting more money off me if I signed up for the Trade Up deal.
All of this is probably normal for regular posters here, but I am slightly miffed!

Plus $120 at the time of upgrade. So its really $240 for the 12 month upgrade option. Looks like a great deal on a poster, t&c's not so sexy.

Pretty sure I've got this right (correct me if I'm wrong!): The trade up offer is $10 a month on top of the interest free payment and your monthly plan cost (Minimum plan of $49 a month). After paying a minimum of $120 (12 months) you can trade up, and at that time you pay another $120 to get a new phone (so a total of $240 above the interest free payments and plan payments, and of course hand over your 12 month old phone "that's in good working order and has no screen cracks").

If you just want a phone interest free over 24 months but don't want the trade-up offer, there's no extra $10 a month.

The question i have is do they replace the phone with the exact same model at the 12mth mark or can you switch to another model for the pool of available phones? Can I try an iphone and then switch to an Android or vice versa? Does an Galaxy S5 get replaced with a S6 or will they keep a stash of S5's for upgrades?

Upgrading to the newer generation of your existing handset is the only benefit i can see

They don't make that obvious! I found this in the terms and conditions for the Trade Up plan - "With Trade Up, you will have the right to upgrade to the latest handset provided that:" "the latest handset of your choosing is eligible for an upgrade exchange with your existing Eligible Handset"

Vodafone have had similar for $20 a month, when you do the math you are better to save the funds, sell your old phone and buy the new model.

This is what I plan on doing for my next upgrade, assuming I can't convince Vodafone to let me do a resign after 16 month :)

Exactly...

Eligible phones;

iPhone - 5s, 6, 6+
Samsung - S5, Note 4

So if i buy a 5s, can I swap it for a 6+ at the 12mth mark? I doubt it very much but i can't find and T&C's surrounding this scenario

I was confused at first when saw their advert for the first time. This is my understanding after speaking to 2degrees customer service.

Let say I bought note-4 ($1149) on $49 plan.

You paid $29 upfront. Total per month $49 + $47 + $10 = $106/month

After 12 months, you can get a new phone. You paid one off $120, take a new phone (let say note5) and continue paying at the same price of $106/month if the phone is at the same price.

That means, the total you paid for that year for note4 ($47*12) + $240 (extra $10/month + one off $120) + $29 (one off at the start) = $833/year.

The phone price is $1149, so that means 2degrees buy back the note 4 for $316 after 12 months.

Your next phone will determine the total price you will be paying - $49 + X + $10
