I got the Genius service not long after it cam out on ADSL in 2011 if I remember correctly.
Sure at the start I had a few issues, but for the most part it has been fairly reliable.

I shifted just over 18 months ago and brought the service with me to my new house, still on ADSL and all was good.
Then along came fiber and I got that installed and got unlimited, VERY happy with the internet connection.

Now the sad part.

Since I have had the new White Orcon Genius modem I don't think I have had more than two weeks of Phone up time.

The phone light on the modem is brightly indicating I have a connected and working phone line on port 1, however there hardly ever seems to be an actual dial tone when I pick up the physical phone.

Now the failure always seems to happen after some sort of maintenance that is done on the Orcon network.
Ok I reboot the ONT and Modem (in the correct order) and the modem comes back on line, tells me I have a phone connection......
I pick up the phone - nothing - no dial tone.

The first time I call support, they ask me to default the modem.... Stunned silence from me... WTF? I didn't change anything...
Ok after much discussion I default the modem, and wow - the phone is now working. What just happened here I ask the tech on the other end.

He states that the modem had to pull down the latest settings.... ok fine I think, I won't have to do that again....

Now I trudge through changing the default settings to allow services I want to run and change the passwords, SSID etc.

Come to the next network outage.

I reboot the modem and the internet connection springs back to life, but no phone again..... really?

Tech support say to default the modem, ffs. I give up and do it again. The phone comes back to life.

Ok, the phone is working again, I get on with my life.

The next network update happens (last week sometime I think) and the phone dies again.

Just called tech support, they push the settings to the modem/server.
I restart the modem and ONT as they suggest, wait for 20 minutes, nothing.
Call tech support, they aren't available.....

I am getting fed up with this, my wife is beyond annoyed and my family cannot get in touch with us unless they call our cell phones - which they don't like doing.
I am paying for a service I can't use.
I have even tried the Orcon Genius app on my iPhone, it can't even initiate a call to itself.

Your service is broken, for sanity's sake fix it or at least give me another method of defaulting just the VoIP settings in the modem without defaulting the entire thing.
Having to reset the settings in a modem every few weeks is getting tiresome.

Don't get me wrong, LOVE the internet package, just really, really, REALLY hate the VoIP solution

<takes a deep breath and walks away from the keyboard>

I'm just fed up with having to default my modem just to get the phone working again.
I'm very tempted to use this event to just dump the phone line all together, it's that frustrating.
And the voice quality is utter rubbish, my handset has a horrible high pitch whine when talking on it - it was the same with the original black modem.

I have an old linksys router that I'm tempted to use as the VoIP termination to see if that can make things work any better.
I can't use a single phone as the solution as everyone else in the house has to use it as well.

It worked for years on ADSL, why has it suddenly started failing like this?
There must be a reason, and I doubt that it's anything I have done.
