Hi all,

Last week I got a Chromecast, and I'm having a few issues with trying to use it with Netflix.  Not sure if it's an Orcon / GlobalMode / Router problem or not, but I'm starting here in the hope that someone may be able to help.

Basically, when I try to cast from my (Android) phone using the Netflix app, I'm probably going to get "Error 16004" reported on the app, and a blank (black) screen on the TV/Chromecast.  Generally, same symptoms if I use Chrome Browser on my Macbook (Yosemite, if it matters) - black screen on TV, and eventually a timeout/error message in Chrome.

HOWEVER!  If I simply reboot my Orcon White AND DO NOTHING ELSE, then it all "just works".  For a while.  And then it doesn't. Again.  "Just works" means I can cast from the App; the NetFlix logo appears on the TV/Chromecast, and the viewing starts OK.  US content via Global mode, no problem.

Note that I'm NOT using the WiFi on my Orcon White router (ethernet partitioning issues); so the Chromecast connects to another WiFi AP which is cabled into one of the Orcon's Ethernet ports.  I'm fairly sure that wouldn't cause an issue, but you never know....

I'm a little at a loss to see what may be timing out or not working on the router, and why a router reboot fixes it; hence asking for help here.

Note that the Chromecast is powered via a USB port on the TV; so it gets regular reboots (each time I turn the TV off/on!); so if the Chromecast needs to do UPNP or some-clever-behind-the-scene-stuff to get ports open on the router's Firewall, it should be able to sort that at Chromecast poweron; I'm not saying it does, just theorizing.

Do any of the Orcon staff here have any suggestions and/or know anything about this problem?

Ta!

If the second AP is using a different range of IP addresses the it's another network and your Android won't find the Chromecast. Check DHCP configurations.

Also, are using Netflix NZ, and if yes, make sure there's no "foreigner" DNS anywhere.

Only one AP on the network; and the Orcon Router provides the DHCP leases.  Appreciate the thought, but that's not the issue.

As implied (but not explicitly stated above), GlobalMode is active, so I'm accessing the US Netflix site; however, I have also tested with GlobalMode off and that didn't seem to make much difference.

As I can access US contents directly after the router reboot, I'm fairly sure GlobalMode is doing its thing correctly.

I've not made any changes to the DNS settings in the Orcon white - at the moment, they're set to 121.98.0.1 and 121.98.0.2 (which I assume are Orcon's DNS)

freitasm: Check DHCP configurations.

OK, I double-checked.  You've helped uncover something that definitely WON'T be helping!  Thanks!

(Advanced Setup/LAN - DHCP "secondary DNS Server: 8.8.8.8") - Whoops!  Let's try removing that...

Thanks, Mauricio; I wouldn't have noticed that if you hadn't prompted me to go and actually look...

I'll try the TV tonight when I get home and see how it goes.  (Sadly, actually turning on the TV and watching it is a little too advanced for my VPN setup...)

Sadly, didn't fix the issue.   As the Chromecast hard-codes to 8.8.8.8. anyway, and GlobalMode is supposed to auto-fix that, I wasn't entirely hopeful.

Pity.

Any other ideas/suggestions welcomed....

Yes, I'm going to try blocking the Google IPs on my NF4V (assuming I can figure out how!); but was under the impression that Orcon "twiddles" (that's a technical term!) with those packets as part of GlobalMode anyway...  (Their website implies it should "just work!").

Thanks; will see what that does....

Did you manage to resolve this?
I'm having the same issue here, on the black Orcon genius modem with out of the box settings.

Not yet, no.   To be honest, I've not been using NetFlix as much as I thought I might; so lacked the impetus to do more about it - although that will probably change over the winter.

It's frustrating the hell out of me! I can get it to connect one time after resetting the Netflix app

I've blocked 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and set the router dns to open-us and that seems to work, the big issues I have is that android and chromecast seem to see differnt regions some how and then nothing will work

I think the android app is ready the timezone of the device and using that as an additional filter...

Or perhaps your smartphone is using the mobile data network instead of your WiFi?
