Just trying to get my head around the process for leaving Orcon to a different UFB ISP.

I understand there is a 30 day notice period, so if I sign up to the new ISP to start on the 18th of next month (30 days from now) I will be charged for this next month with Orcon (with a credit for the period of the 19th - 23rd of this coming month)

Is that about right?

Also

Do I need to inform Orcon I am moving on that date or will the new ISP inform them (and if I do need to inform them, what is the best way of doing that?)

Thanks

You should contact your old provider to find out the best way to do it, so you don't get stung with an extra month. Yes, you should always contact your ISP to cancel the service, if at the very least for your own piece of mind. Also get everything in writing, so get them to email you a confirmation.

Yeah best to get in touch with your current ISP and arrange with them.  Makes sense to record the call and keep copies of the email communication.

All the ISP change horror stories start by contacting the existing ISP. Just deal with your new provider, once up and running THEN contact the old one and close the account.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

If that is what you agreed to when you signed up with them, yes.

But you can get the new ISP to schedule a connection about 35 days out, they will load it with chorus and then you can give notice to orcon on day 5 after that (assuming that the new ISP has loaded it with chorus) - the change order means that orcon cant cancel it, but there is still plenty of room for things to go wrong.

Other option is to get the new ISP installed on your spare pair to the house, and once its working cancel the orcon connection. If you are on unbundled orcon then there can be all sorts of cockups with moving you back to the chorus gear that can leave you internetless for days and days while new ISP and chorus swap their stories about what is going on.

According to the privacy commission, this would be especially true with Orcon. tongue-out

In general, it is always good to overlap services when transitioning - this means you often need to pay for an extra unused month with your previous provider. Something can go wrong and in business, its worth that extra $100. For a home user, it depends how important your internet is to you.

OP is churning to another ISP on UFB, if in Chorus area, that would involve getting a second ONT installed as I think Chorus don't support enabling the second port on the ONT atm.

So I rang Orcon on the 20th and advised them I was giving my 90 days notice.
I have signed up for BigPipe to take over the connection on the 17th of June (hopefully giving me 3 working days to sort out any issues in the switchover).

Orcon however want me to ring them again after BigPipe has taken the connection so that they can send me a courier bag to return my Genius router (which is still sitting unused in its box)

So fingers crossed all goes alright

ideally, you waited for us to confirm that date with Chorus before you told Orcon. :)

An issue that sometimes comes up is that when someone gives their current ISP notice and the new ISP hasn't yet placed the order, then the old ISP places a 'disconnection order' which actually blocks the new ISP from even placing their order until that disconnection has completed - even if that order is for a date after the disconnection is processed.   (and if they don't know the customer is switching ISPs, this is actually the correct thing to do)

Best way to avoid the cross-over is to sign up with new ISP first, selecting a date ~35 days in the future.
New ISP will come back to you within a day or so to confirm the order has been placed and Chorus have given an RFS date.
Once that has happened, you can safely contact your old ISP and give them the 30 days notice required and they can't accidentally block your order anymore because the transition order is already in place.

And as it's orcon best keep ringing them to see if you owe them anything so they don't send you to baycorp unannounced.

Was multiple Orcon customer back in the Jetstream days and again when they attempted to do unlimited in later years. Always have had the worst experience leaving Orcon - suffice to say I paid them 30 days to get rid of them and to release the connection
