My father got a new iMac tonight.. I tried to help him setup Mail to connect (and send) from my "lifetime" Orcon email account and while connecting works and new emails are received, sending doesn't.

I have his old MacBook Pro in front of me - checked the settings on the new iMac to the MacBook and everything is the same.
However the new iMac just can't send an email.

I have checked Orcon's website for assistance and have everything setup as per the instructions on there as well (which match the MacBook Pro) and it would seem to indicate everything should work.

Before I throw my hands in the yell and go ****** Mac's or ****** Orcon, can anyone point me in the right direction

Is Orcon his ISP??  If so it's  mail.orcon.net.nz.   If not then it's still the same but you will have to send email via port 587.

We are with Snap, and have the SMTP settings set at mail.orcon.net.nz on port 587 using authentication.

Exactly the same settings as the Macbook and my own Outlook - which send email

Mail keeps on saying the SMTP is offline

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Precision is important. You have implied one device, type unspecified, can't send email, software unspecified, while two other devices (type specified, software unspecified) can send email. "Mail keeps on saying the SMTP is offline" is also ambiguous. You haven't specified wifi/ethernet. If you'd like help I think you need to give more information.

^ But I have already said, the only thing I have missed from your request for more information is connection type
If you knew Mac's, you would know that MAIL is the email client for Mac's

Device - iMac, Mail Client - Mail
- this is the new device and is not working

Device - MacBook Pro, Mail Client - Mail
- old device, working

Device - iPhone, Mail Client - Mail
- working

All are connected to WiFi, Ethernet NOT possible

Mac Mail is a PITA (just for reference).

If the old devices are working, and the new device isn't, then it's something to do with configuration of your new device. Could be firewall, how the WiFi is set up, anything really.

I finally had a chance to call Orcon last night.
I think I lost the conversation when I had to explain that I was not a paying customer, but using their free lifetime email account from when I was a customer.

The support tech mentioned that POP just sets itself up and after more unsuccessful attempts involving a combination of port changes, SSL on/off, and authentication I was told that the problem was with the new iMac.

I decided at this point to work on another issue - Clear.Net email setup and since no emails had been downloaded I just removed the mailbox.
This had a side effect of ungrouping the Orcon settings in the Connection Doctor and SMTP advised "authentication issue"

Turns out that the "yes I am 100% sure this is the correct password" password we had been entering for SMTP authentication was not the password at all.
Not sure how the correct password was put in to receive the emails.

So, crisis over :-)
Looking back, I was shocked (but also at the same time not) that the support technician didn't raise password as an issue and blamed the computer.
