What a shame. Who is staying and who is jumping ship?

Am mulling it over, because I don't like the inability to have an open port as well but Global made up for that.

Thoughts anyone?

think of at a liberating experience.

you can now choose your ISP based on things like the quality of the broadband and customer service, rather than the fact they give you an added extra.
(IMHO you should always be picking ISPs on this basis anyway)

Sign up with a different ISP if you want (or stick with Flip) and get unblock-us or unotelly - they are both better than global mode anyway and only costs about $5/month

Global mode tipped the balance for me. Will probably change because you can't use DNS services on Flip.

I was unable to get any of the services to work so contacted Flip support. Bin came back with this:

"Smart DNS type services is not compatible on the Flip internet network due to how our network is configured and setup. So services like these will not work on the Flip internet service."

been told they are keeping it turned on for certain customers, but thats the last i'll say of it as i dont want to get it taken away

Why not?

I was unable to get any of the services to work so contacted Flip support. Bin came back with this:

Issues can arise with CG-NAT style connections.

I contacted Flip again this week to check before I signed up to another service and got a similar reply to me previous one, i.e. no way hosay. Can't do a static ip either so the Smart DNS services don't work. I've signed up to My Republic.

QJay: been told they are keeping it turned on for certain customers, but thats the last i'll say of it as i dont want to get it taken away

If you like to watch streaming TV and you can get fibre was there a reason you were considering Flip in the first place? Serious question.

When I first signed up with them I wasn't watching streaming tv (except the occasional BBC iplayer programme via hola). They were the cheapest for the 60GB that I needed that included a phone line. Also, fibre has only come available in my region in the last couple of months. Basically my needs have changed and Flip no longer meets them.

I've been with Flip for quite a while, but I've just changed, due to the end of Global mode - it was the final straw.

Because of the CG-NAT they use, I was finding that I could go to the page that shows your public IP address, like MyIPaddress.com or whatever, and I could refresh that page every few seconds, and each time it would show me as having a different public IP address.
Another issue I have, is Unblock-US, and UNOTelly, said that I was sharing an IP address with another Unblock-US accountholder. Again, because of the way CG-NAT works. It means they will use the same IP address for multiple customers. and they seem to chop and change on the fly.
You can see how this would make it very difficult to work with services like:

Unblock-US
UNOtelly
A NAS server which you want to access remotely.
A remote server
A wifi CCTV cam accessed remotely via the internet.

I could work around the issue of a dynamic IP using dynamic DNS services, but not when its provisioned via CG-NAT, which makes it impossible. I'd have a different IP address every time the dynamic DNS checker would poll.

So I've gone for a service with a static IP address. Hopefully they have plenty of international bandwidth to stream High def Youtube, Netflix, and Hulu plus...

Yes same, the IP address was changing every few seconds but only the last segment. I've moved as well, to unlimitedinternet.co.nz so we'll see how that goes. I haven't bothered with a static IP yet, I've got DNS4ME and it's working fine so far. On the upside I can get my open ports back!

Yes, they're the service I went with too, and because I've got so much stuff that I want to access from the internet, I've gone with static IP. I've currently got a glitch getting connected, I think it's a Chorus technician mistake, so I have no internet other than via my phone right now, but once that gets sorted, I'll be interested to test out the performance on and off peak of unlimitedinternet.co.nz. I wish they'd come up with a better name though, FWIW.

Are you already connected with them? How is the speed and stability so far, if so?

My Republic use CG-NAT too, I think you need to opt-out at $20 (from what I recall - might not be correct on this).

I'd personally recommend dns4me (http://dns4me.net). Cheap, great support and made by a New Zealander. Been using them for over a year now with zero issues.

Depending on what router you've got I've got a guide Here on setting up dns4me on Tomato / OpenWRT without having to use their DNS servers. This will soon be updated when they fully release their new API.
